Midfielder Paul Hackett was dropped in favour of a third striker, record signing Les Lawrence. The lanky frontman had signed for ?10,000 during the Conference season from Kettering Town, but had failed to impress, scoring only two goals in the previous eight months. Ironically during this period Conference newcomers Farnborough Town offered a reported ?7,000 to take Lawrence to Cherrywood Road, but with the forward's return to form and with record score Cliff Hercules sidelined through injury Gould declined.
This match was Lawrence's finest in an Aylesbury shirt, but sadly the former Cambridge, Peterborough, Burnley, Rochdale, Aldershot, Port Vale, Torquay and Shrewsbury man was injured in the next match with Basingstoke. Despite making a brief comeback later in the season, his United career was over, and he left Buckingham Road for Corby Town.
Just under a thousand watched in awe as Lawrence and Graham Reed won everything in the air allowing Rob Smith and the United midfield to prosper. Allan Pluckrose was the first United player to score in the Isthmian League when he powered home a Steve Ketteridge corner. Plucky should have made it two shortly afterwards before Steve Cox had the opportunity to double his side's lead from the penalty spot, but his weak effort was saved by Kevin Mitchell in the Windsor goal.
Just before the break a Junior Wilson free kick was flicked on by Lawrence to Peter Hutter. The United skipper played Allan Pluckrose in and the RAF man made no mistake from eight yards.
The Windsor front line, lead by former Duck Rowan Dodds, barely got a look in, and mustered one effort all afternoon, Simon Delahunty turning a Francis Araguez cross into the net.
Les Lawrence took control of the second period, hitting the post with one effort, before grabbing his side's third on sixty two minutes. A lofted cross evaded both Reed and Mitchell and the United frontman slammed the ball home. Lawrence nearly added a fourth late on but Mitchell was equal to his header and pushed it to safety.
