Confidence was high therefore, and United almost took the lead in the opening minute, Peter Hutter's ferocious effort coming back off the upright.
The opener came after thirty five minutes when Steve Ketteridge's corner found Rob Smith in space and the diminutive striker slotted home from close range.
The home side's best effort of the game came just before half time when Martin Coates shot was too close to Tim Garner and the Aylesbury number one saved easily.
After the interval United turned the screw and Rob Smith added a second ten minutes after the restart. Ketteridge's free kick eluded all the big men and Smith, as he often did, drifted in at the back post to net.
Junior Wilson then missed two golden opportunities before Smith, looking for his hat-trick, was upended in the box. To the surprise of the travelling Ducks fans Smith wasn't allowed to take the spot kick and Graham Reed stepped up to fire home.
Disappointment turned to delight two minutes from time though as Rob Smith beat the offside trap and the advancing keeper to claim the match ball and put United six points clear at the top of the table.
