Early on Fosbury blocked a goalbound header from Cliff Hercules, and Glen Donegal brought a fine save out of Rocks keeper Lee Edwards. The first goal arrived after 27 minutes when Rob Smith crossed from the right flank towards Glen. The tall frontman failed to connect but the ball came off the head of Burnside and flew past Edwards for an own goal. As the half ended Fosbury narrowly missed the target from long range, and Tim Garner raced from his line to hack clear from the same player.
Three minutes into the second period United increased the lead with a stunning second goal. A Bognor corner was cleared by Cliff to Owen Wright who raced into the Bognor half before finding Junior Wilson with a crossfield ball down the right wide. The overlapping defender cut inside, and seeing Edwards off his line curled a beauty over the keeper's head and into the top corner from fully 30 yards.
As the half wore on a close range effort by Glen was deflected for a corner, then Rob Smith blasted wide from a good position. Understandably in the heat United sat back on their lead and weathered some strong pressure by the home side, but Tim was never really tested. After bringing on both substitutes Bognor were ?rocked' further when Burnside limped out of the game late on to reduce his team's numbers once more.
At the final whistle the Ducks were applauded for their season's efforts by a 200 strong following, many of whom joined an impromptu entertaining match on the Rocks hallowed turf under the guidance of that well known referee ? club secretary Tony Graham!
