The 1991/92 season was United's third in the Isthmian League, and after two third places, their dream of returning to the Conference was fading fast.
A poor start to the season had left Trevor Gould's men languishing in mid-table when they visited the Rec. They had however knocked Conference side Kidderminster Harriers out of the FA Cup just a few days earlier. Grays were also having mixed fortunes and trailed the Ducks by just two points.
The game was very much a case of 'after the Lord Mayor's Show', as Aylesbury fell two goals behind in less than half an hour. Horace Nelson's shot was deflected past Tim Garner by Paul Benning for the first, while Nicky Crown doubled his side's lead.
United grabbed a lifeline before the break when Barrie Delf couldn't hold Darren Collins' ferocious shot and Andy Robinson slotted home the rebound to register his first for the club.
They could not capitalise though and Grays' two goal cushion was restored shortly into the second period when Steve Ward fired home from close range.
Without impressing the Ducks scored again with fifteen minutes remaining when Darren Collins bundled the ball home following a goalmouth scramble, and right on time the former Northampton Town striker was instrumental in the equaliser as his cross was turned home by Andy Robinson to secure an unlikely point.
