Aylesbury, under the guidance of Dave Sansom, were struggling to be anything more than mediocre midtable, whilst their opponents St. Albans had Championship ambitions, and were riding high in second place.
After a goalless first period it was United who broke the deadlock. Phil Heath outpaced future Duck Peter Risley and played the ball in field to Graham Westley. The future Farnborough supremo had recently signed for the Ducks in controversial fashion in a bizarre player swap for the highly rated Darren Collins. Collins went to Enfield and later played for Rushden and Kettering in the Conference, while Westley came to United at the end of his career and only returned to prominence as owner of Farnborough. This was to be Westley's afternoon though, and despite looking suspiciously offside he cracked the ball home.
The visitors got their deserved equaliser from another familiar source when another future Duck, Dean Williams, turned and shot home through a crowded penalty area.
That looked to be that, but as fans started drifting home for cold turkey sandwiches, the third of the Ducks to be, Steve Clark, rose at the far post to head home. With thirty seconds of normal time remaining the visiting fans went wild.
They hadn't reckoned on Westley though, and two minutes into injury time the goal poacher was on hand to grab a dramatic equaliser. The best was yet to come as minutes later Francis Cassidy's pass was met first time by the United striker. The full time whistle blew, Westley trotted off with his bottle of champagne and the United faithful drove home dreaming of a rosy new year.
