Slough, riding high in the GM Vauxhall Conference, were missing several first-teamers, including former Ducks star Allan Pluckrose for the first round tie. Injury cannot entirely explain the omissions. Dave Kemp's team selection for an official first team game perhaps indicative of Slough's lack of interest in the County Cup.
This, of course, needn't have worried United who booked themselves an away tie at Flackwell Heath, who beat Wycombe Wanderers in their First Round tie.
Slough did include George Friel in their line-up, a talented striker who was with Woking the previous season. He was the main threat to United, heading a near post cross from David Greene at keeper Bill Davies in the 23rd minute.
Though Dean Goodliffe forced Davies into a good save six minutes later, United were largely in control.
The breakthrough, and what turned out to be the winner, came in the 32nd minute when Graham Westley crossed from the by-line for Nick Ashby to convert from close range.
Repeated Slough attacks lacked the sophistication and penetration to break down the United defence during the rest of the game and Aylesbury always seemed likely to add to their lead. Early in the second half, Westley went close following a Cliff Hercules cross and Aylesbury again nearly scored the all important second in the 78th minute.
Receiving a pass from Steve Grenfell, Andy Robinson put in a high cross from the left. Carried by the wind it dipped over Trevor Bunting into the net but was disallowed for pushing. This was unfortunate for United. They had deserved a second goal.
