Skipper Bob Dowie opened The Ducks' account on 21 minutes with a header from Ian Hazel's corner and just a minute later it was 2-0 when defender Newman's mistake let in Cliff Hercules who slotted past keeper Tony Williams.
Within 45 seconds it was 3-0 when Naseem Bashir cut inside his marker before thundering a drive into the far corner.
Williams made several fine saves to keep the score down but was finally beaten again on 66 minutes when Paul Hobbs crossed for Allan Pluckrose to head in for 4-0.
The Ducks were reduced to 10 men on 80 minutes when, having used all 3 subs, Hercules limped off injured after Varney's tackle but it didn't show as they went 5-0 up on 85 when Hobbs fed Steve Heard who dummied keeper Williams before slotting into an empty net.
Varney was sent off for his second yellow card in the 88th minute after bringing Pluckrose down in the box but player manager Steve Ketteridge's penalty was saved for a corner.
Only a mixture of near misses and keeper Williams' fine saves prevented The Ducks from securing a far bigger win.
