Early on, Matt Carmichael almost capped a flowing move but volleyed just wide. Carl Hoddle went close twice before Michael Danzey opened the scoring on 32 minutes. A half corner fell invitingly to United's Player of the Year and, after it bounced once, Danzey struck an angled volley into the far top corner of Blake's net.
Salako and Daly had near misses for Carshalton, but five minutes into the second half United went 2-0 ahead. Luke Longman was sent sprawling by Bowyer in the box and Carmichael converted from the penalty spot.
Thereafter United took control and only rarely did the Robins threaten Gary Phillips.
Danzey waltzed through but shot wide before Carshalton pulled a goal back on 85 minutes. Kingsford went into the area unchallenged and passed to Eddie Saunders who made no mistake from close range.
In the last minute United put the result beyond doubt. Hoddle spread a long pass to Kieran Gallagher and his waist high cross was volleyed home by Carmichael at the near post.
