Gary Crawshaw put United in front after 11 minutes when an Ian King free kick was headed downwards by Thorp and Crawshaw reacted quickly to fire past Matassa from 14 yards.
Chances were few and far between in a quiet first half. The nearest United came to adding to their lead was following a misdirected clearance by Huxford which fell into the path of Mike Bignall, but the ball's high bounce enabled Matassa to come out and collect. Deep into injury time Town levelled. A deep cross was driven in, Kieran Gallagher sliced his clearance to Mancey and his first time angled volley bounced over Simon Brown.
In the second half Gallagher and Crawshaw went close, but on 74 minutes Town went 2-1 up from a huge clearance by Matassa. The ball fell into the path of Xavier and he raced clear before slotting past Brown.
United three on all three substitutions and their pressure paid off on 82 minutes. King crossed, Gallagher's shot hit Richardson, and Bignall followed up to score his first goal in a United shirt.
In a frantic finish, United struck again two minutes from time after a nasty foul by Redwood on Gallagher out wide on the right. King put the free kick into the crowded box and Crawshaw made no mistake at the far post, his 29th goal of the season.
