Despite opening their campaign with a victory against Walton & Hersham, the Ducks found points hard to come by early on in 1999/00 and that early win was followed by a run of five defeats and a draw. The visit of perennial title favourites Aldershot therefore wasn't expected to offer any relief.
The visitors away form was impressive, three wins out of three, but it was lowly United who started the stronger. Gary Phillips in the Ducks goal was in inspired form against the side he'd left in the summer and never really looked troubled.
The match as a spectacle fired into life when Aylesbury netted twice in the space of two minutes after the interval. Substitute Corey Browne set up Cliff Hercules to score his 294th goal for the club, before Browne again was involved, giving Neil Selby the opportunity to hit his third goal in three games.
This rather knocked the stuffing out of George Borg's side and the United scoring was completed late on when Neil Baker put through his own goal. At last the home fans had something to celebrate.
