After a depressing September - bar the win over Aldershot - United again showed a marked improvement, despite being without
Cliff Hercules (suspended) and
Gary Crawshaw (injured ankle). At least
Warren Kelly showed no ill effects from his absence and his partner at the back was none other than
Kevin Davies - yes the same 'Dabber' who first made his debut for the club way back in 1981...
Early on, Liam Daish headed a Gary MacDonald cross just over, whilst Neil Selby had a 'goal' ruled out for offside. Most of the first half was fairly even. For Havant & Waterlooville Paul Wood proved a constant threat, whilst for United Neil Catlin sent a powerful header just over, and Ollie Stanbridge (replacing the injured Phil Mason after 26 minutes) had a great chance soon after coming on but hurried his shot well over. As the half ended, Steve Tate and Dave Milkins both went close for the home side.
In the second half United's rearguard again performed well and the home side rarely troubled Des Gallagher. United created the better openings but all to no avail. Mike Bignall chipped over on 50 minutes, Ian King slotted just wide and King's free kick went straight at keeper Mark Brown. In the closing stages from a half-cleared King corner, Kieran Gallagher's first-time drive went straight to the towering Brown and it remained all square.
