For a very open game, it was a surprise that it took 25 minutes before the first goal was scored, Neil Selby going clear before slotting past Wilmot. In between, Phillips had denied Fenton, Abbey and Williams, and Kieran Gallagher hit a post following good work by Lee Cook.
Three minutes from the interval Fenton levelled with a superb free kick. On 52 minutes Parker headed a corner back for Burke to head in, then Phillips tipped over a point blank shot by Parker.
On 62 minutes Fenton made it 3-1 from the penalty spot after Warren Kelly had brought him down in the area. Soon afterwards Wilmot saved from Selby and Wayne Stemp struck the bar following a corner.
A minute later Kevin Davies crossed and Gallagher volleyed in, then Wilmot parried shots from Cook and Ian King in quick succession. On 79 minutes Turner exchanged passes with Burke who set-up Parker to make it 4-2, but United hit back when Cook's corner to the near post was volleyed past Wilmot by Gallagher.
On 84 minutes Cook looped a header over Wilmot but the crossbar came to Hitchin's rescue again. In injury time Abbey was sent off for a high boot on Kelly. This game really did have just about everything, except a positive result for the Green and Whites.
