United had begun in determined fashion and Selby, Crawshaw and Scott Honeyball missed good chances. On 28 minutes Courtnage made a great point blank save from Crawshaw, and four minutes later against the run of play Maskell fired a low shot past Gary Phillips to put Hampton 1-0 up.
Phillips made amends with a fine tip over from Flitter just before the break, and the second half was very similar to the first. Courtnage saved efforts by Allan Pluckrose and Gallagher, but back came Hampton on 66 minutes to score again. Charles got the better of the offside trap and squeezed the ball beyond Phillips from a narrow angle.
After 75 minutes Crawshaw smacked a header against the crossbar, then a minute later Warren Kelly tripped Charles in the box for a penalty, but Phillips saved Maskell's spot-kick low to his right.
Gallagher gave United hope with his 80th minute strike, then with United pushing up they were caught on the break by Wood whose 30-yard shot hit the post. Thankfully justice was eventually done by Selby's late point saver.
