In the opening exchanges Gary Crawshaw fired just over the bar, keeper Richard Wilmot denied Bobby Highton, whilst at the other end a mistake by Kevin Davies gave Lamey a chance. The newly signed striker lobbed the ball over Gary Phillips but Cliff Hercules got back to head off the line.
Darren Grieves broke the deadlock on 23 minutes with a low shot past Wilmot, only for Lamey to level at 1-1 a minute later. Two minutes into the second half Crawshaw beat two defenders before slotting the ball under Wilmot to restore United's lead, and moments later Wilmot tipped over a spectacular effort by Iain Duncan.
In an exciting match both sides created numerous chances before United killed off the Canaries twelve minutes from time. Ollie Stanbridge had a shot blocked and Grieves pounced to score his second and United's third.
