Aylesbury started brightly, as they seem to do in every game at the moment. In the 2nd minute Maskell latched onto a Sloma flick, and his right-footed shot produced a save from keeper James Robinson. Five minutes later he was at it again as his lazy looking cross-shot bounced on the top of the bar.
United were keeping the ball well, something which had eluded them in previous matches, and creating a lot of chances. On 10 minutes Bangura nearly beat the keeper to a ball over the top from Mark Burgess. 7 minutes later, and Bangura was instrumental in Aylesbury's first goal. Bangura hassled a Hitchin player, and won the ball back, before delivering a fine right-footed cross, which was just asking for Craig Maskell to arrive and nod it into the back of the net. Maskell clashed heads with a defender for his troubles, but the Ducks fans joy knew no limits! 1-0 Aylesbury
Hitchin were being outplayed by now, and a goal for them looked highly unlikely. Disaster struck for the Ducks though, as on 24 minutes, Tony Houghton was adjudged to have tripped Hitchin's Matt Nolan, and the ref pointed to the spot. Hitchin's Dean Brennan trotted up and sent Wheelo the wrong way. 1-1
Hitchin's goal certainly lifted their performance, as they were suddenly getting the ball and creating their own chances. 6 found himself with space to deliver a good cross, which Steve McGrath managed to head away before it reached the waiting Hitchin player. Adter 31 minutes Aylesbury survived another penalty appeal, as Houghton appeared to bundle over no. 6. It certainly looked more of a penalty than the first...
The Ducks let frustration creep into their game, as they were reduced to long-range efforts, first from Fiston Manuella, then Risbridger and Sloma. Risbridger went closest with a venomous drive, which went just over. Manuella managed to get himself booked, after 33 minutes of his debut.
Right on half-time, Nolan fashioned Hitchin's best chance, as he hit a wicked shot towards the top corner, which was well-saved by Wheeler.
Half-time: Aylesbury 1-1 Hitchin
The second half was a different story, as Aylesbury went from strength to strength. Hitchin simply were never in it. After 50 minutes a long-shot from Sloma was held by the keeper, and three minutes later some Kezie Ibe skill resulted in him shooting straight at Hitchin's no. 1.
Phil Dicker replaced McGrath after 53 minutes.
After 62 minutes it was Aylesbury's turn to appeal for a penalty, as Ibe was clattered to the ground under a heavy tackle. Ducks fans were disappointed to see Bangura leaving the field after 63 minutes, with an injury. His replacement wasn't too bad though, in Greg Williams.
Baggy's withdrawal didn't seem to affect the team too much though, as 4 minutes later Ibe rounded the keeper, and kept his head to finish coolly. A beautiful dummy from Maskell had let the ball run onto Sam Sloma, who released Ibe. 2-1 Aylesbury
Aylesbury were on the rampage, as they continued to threaten Hitchin's goal. An excellent Greg Williams cross didn't quite reach Gareth Risbridger, and the ball eventually fell to Manuella, whose wild volley went well over.
A minute later and the game was seemingly wrapped up by Aylesbury, as they scored a third. A freekick outside the box was rolled inside to Sloma, who's low cross was parried by the keeper. The ball fell nicely to Manuella, who emphatically wellied the ball home, to cap an impressive debut. 3-1 Aylesbury
The Ducks took the rare liberty of enjoying their lead, perhaps too much, as the sat back for the remainder of the half. Hitchin made two changes, and Martin Carter replaced Risbridger for the last 8 minutes.
After making another change, Hitchin rallied in the closing moments, and got a consolation goal in stoppage time. A long ball bounced over the defence, and Brennan got a decisive touch to lob the stranded Wheeler. 3-2 Aylesbury
As the time ticked by, the referee decided to add an eternity of stoppage time, during which Houghton got booked. Hitchin through everything bar the kitchen sink at the Ducks goal, but fortunately were unable to score an equaliser. Still, it was a nervy end for the Aylesbury faithful.
