The game started brightly with some high paced passing from the Ducks on show from the kick-off. However, an early Campion injury after a heavy collision with 'big' Lee Harvey slowed things down. The first chance of the game fell to Craig Maskell, after a fine run and low-cross from Greg Williams. Maskell saw his shot well blocked by a Wood defender.
Kezie Ibe went on a superb run, culminating in a double stepover (Ronaldinho style), but he slotted his shot wide of the post. Two minutes later a Campion low, dangerous ball across the box was just missed by Ibe. It only needed a touch and it would've been in the back of the net.
By now Aylesbury were running the show, with Fiston and Greg doing a great domination job in midfield. Chances were coming regularly, but were not being finished. Joe Baker hit a wicked free-kick, before a long-range Kezie shot went flying over the bar.
The two Ducks wingers, Campion and Baker were easily taking the 3-man Wood defence apart with their pace. Another couple of chances went wanting, as a cross-cum shot from Maskell just dropped wide of the far post, and a sliding shot from Risbridger was cleared off the line.
On 33 minutes the deadlock was finally broken. A Risbridger shot was parried by the Wood keeper, David Kirby. The ball fell invitingly to Adam Campion, who powered the ball home. 1-0 Aylesbury
As the half wore on, Aylesbury seemed determined to sit on their lead and keep a clean sheet until half-time, and the game sank into a scrappy ten minutes. Joe Baker skied a free-kick, before disaster struck deep into stoppage time. Gary McCann failed to hold onto a high cross, and the ball found its way to a Wood player, who hooked it back across goal, for the waiting Corey Browne to stick it away. Typical, had to be an ex-Duck... 1-1
Half-Time: Aylesbury 1 Boreham Wood 1
The second half started in much the same way as the first, lively and entertaining. Again the Ducks were getting all the chances, but were unable to take them. A stampeding run from Gareth Risbridger early in the half saw his weak shot held by the keeper, and Kezie Ibe scuffed his shot when clean though.
Boreham Wood had a rare chance, as they broke on a counter-attack. Corey Browne missed his chance for a 2nd, much to the Ducks relief. Another Risbridger run soon after saw him break into the box, before laying the ball back to Fiston Manuella. His shot was powerful, but wide.
After 59 minutes, the Ducks restored their lead. Kezie Ibe dribbled his way into the box, before being yanked back ex-Aylesbury defender Gary Wotton. The ref pointed to the spot. As the last man a red card looked inevitable, yet the referee felt a yellow card more appropriate, much to the fury of most inside the stadium. Maskell stepped up to stroke home a confident penalty. 2-1 Aylesbury
After 74 minutes the game appeared to have been made safe. Kezie Ibe was taken down, 25 yards from goal. Craig Maskell stepped up and delivered a fantastic free-kick, which curled into the top corner. His 9th goal in 10 games. Surely we'd win now?!? 3-1 Aylesbury
However, just four minutes into their two goal lead, and Aylesbury gave away a goal. A Boreham Wood cross was watched by the Ducks defence, and Gary Dixon somehow headed home. No need to panic, it's still 3-2 Aylesbury
Boreham Wood suddenly started to play, and for the first time in the match they created chances. Corey Browne twisting and turning in the box sent a shot wide.
Steve Cordery made some changes, Chris Bangura replaced the fading Joe Baker, and Sam Sloma came on for the injured Campion.
The Ducks had a chance to score again, in stoppage time, as Kezie Ibe broke free yet again. Instead of squaring the ball to the waiting Bangura, he chose to selfishly go it alone. In what must have been the 100th minute, Boreham Wood got their totally underserved equaliser, to take home a point. A goal mouth scramble resulted in Jeran Meah turning it home. 3-3
To sum it up, our defence is not good enough. In terms of attack, we are up there with the best teams for goals scored, yet our defence is 2nd worst only to Ford United. It's an ongoing problem too - we haven't defended well since the Dowie season. Just how long does a leaky defence take to sort out?
The draw at least means we move up to 12th in the league.
