Lets get one thing straight - this game was un-inspiring to say the least. Neither side played particularly well, and their were few chances to shout about.
For Grays 'Big' Carl Leaburn was always going to be a menace to the Ducks, especially with a backline of Rolfe and Gordon. Indeed it was Leaburn who had the first chance, as his glancing header from an excellent delivery went wide. Leaburn nearly connected with a low cross just after. Fortunately he didn't, as it would have been a certain goal.
At the other end Adam Campion was looking lively, but chances for the Ducks were few and far between. A Bangura cross was met by Julian Charles at the far post, but his header lacked power and was easily held by Mel Capleton.
As the half wore on, and the temperature dropped, Grays were enjoying all the posession, with the Ducks struggling to get the ball. Chances came and went for the hosts, as the Ducks got bodies in the way to block several efforts.
Just before half-time, the Ducks had their first shot on goal. Mark Burgess picked the ball up 10 yards outside the box, and wasn't closed down. He hit a dipping shot straight down the center of the goal, which was just dropping under the crossbar. Capleton managed to just tip the ball over, an excellent save.
Half-time: Grays 0-0 Aylesbury
The second half started with the Ducks showing more belief and interest in the game. Rory Hunter was put clean through on goal, but he put his glorious chance well over the bar with only the keeper to beat. Matt Rolfe had a header blocked from a corner, which appeared goalbound.
Grays seemed subdued as the Ducks searched for a goal. Adam Campion's curling free-kick went over, before the same player went on a run and had a shot, which was yet again blocked by a Grays defender. Grays then went up the other end and had a goal disallowed for offside, much to the few home fans anger.
It was now the turn of Chris Bangura for some poor finishing. Gareth Risbridger mis-hit his shot from the right, across the face of goal. Baggy was just two yards out, but he failed to make clean contact and the ball spun wide. Baggy missed another chance as he was one on one with substitue keeper Lunan, but placed his shot wide.
With the Ducks despairing at not taking their chances, the game seemed to be heading for extra time. However, with seven minutes remaining, substitute Fayeuwo popped up to score. An error by Danny Gordon proved costly, as Fayeuwo ran on and shot. Lee Worgan got a hand to the shot, but it wasn't enough to stop it hitting the back of the net. 1-0 Grays
Despite conceding what looked almost certain to be the winner, the Ducks threw everything forward and brough on Danny Gray and Kezie Ibe to try and snatch something from the game. The only chance they could create though fell again to Bangura, but his right footed shot lacked conviction and trickled into the hands of the keeper.
So we are out of the Bryco Cup for another year. In some ways its a shame as it was a competition we could have won, however we had been drawn against Canvey in the next round, which would have been both hard and another long journey.
