Danny Grieves returned to the side, as did Steve Gallen, in place of youngster Tom Alabaster and the injured Karl Ready respectively. Roni Joe was back from injury, and preferred on the right flank to Adam Campion. Isaac Rukundo continued in goal looking to build on his impressive debut.
The game started at a high tempo, without any chances being created in the first ten minutes. Aylesbury were on top with posession being kept nicely. However, a penalty decision that went against the Ducks after ten minutes seemed to spark Basingstoke into action. Bangura was clearly barged over in the box, but the referee was not going to be swayed. It was blatant.
Basingstoke had their first of many chances after seventeen minutes, as McAllister saw a header at the back post well saved by Rukundo. At the other end a poor clearance by Scott Tarr was gathered by Roni Joe, and he tried his luck from distance, but his shot was well closed down by a defender.
A good run and cross by Alvin Bubb put Bangura in with a chance, but his shot was also blocked by a Basingstoke defender. Sadly, this was as good as it got for the Ducks, as once again they were left short when attacking.
McAliister fired another warning shot goalwards, which required an excellent tip wide by Rukundo. McAllister was given all the time in the world to get his shot in - the Aylesbury defence should take some tips from Basingstoke - they know how to close down shots! From the resulting corner Rukundo spilled the ball under pressure (although it looked like a foul) and Efon Elad could only volley over.
A minute later though, the visitors took the lead. Predictably it was McAllister, and predictably he wasn't closed down. In fact, he was allowed as much time as he liked to set himself and nestle a shot into the bottom corner, on his left foot. 1-0 Basingstoke
After a reasonably uneventful ten further minutes, Basingstoke doubled their lead. A ball up field was superbly flicked on by Elad, for Roach to run onto and slot the ball home. 2-0 Basingstoke
Roni Joe went off injured five minutes before half time, with an apparent recurrance of his hamstring injury. He was replaced by Adam Campion.
Basingstoke still had time for a couple more efforts before half time, as Neville Stamp hit a speculator from distance, which went wide, before Roach, unchallenged, hit a shot straight at Rukundo.
Half-time: Aylesbury 0-2 Basingstoke
After a Roberto Carlos style free-kick to start the half from Stamp, which went over, Aylesbury came out an improved team in the second half. Some better play on the left wing resulted in Daniel Mead crossing the ball, and Dean Canoville will kick himself for a woeful header, which he should have buried.
Some more good play saw the ball spread wide by Bangura, and Alvin Bubb hit a snapshot which went over. Some nice play by Bubb this time saw his cross miss everyone in the box, before being volleyed over by Campion.
As Basingstoke weathered the Ducks mini-storm of attacking, Aylesbury heads seemed to drop as they came to the conclusion that they weren't going to break down the visitors defence. There were barely any more chances to speak of for either team, until Basingstoke scored their third.
An abscence of any marking in the box at a Basingstoke attack, saw the cross miss one attacker, before reaching McAllister, who made no mistake from 10-yards. 3-0 Basingstoke
As the match came to an end, it was a case of everyone wanting to get away as quickly as possible from another nightmare performance. As I write this, it is difficult to see how we can go to Hitchin on Saturday and get any sort of result. Time will tell I'm sure, and we can only remain positive and get behind the team.
