Changes from Chris Boothe's final team selection saw Kevin Davies return in goal, Paul Covington made his debut at centre-back, Alex Stanley came in at left-back with Daniel Mead pushed into midfield, and Lewis Pritchard made his first league start for the club up front.
Sadly for the Ducks, the first half was all about Canvey Island, as they impressively displayed just why they are top of the league, with some neat attacking play and one touch passing.
Chris Duffy spurned the first chance of the game after two minutes. Some good work down the right by Jeff Minton played in Duffy, who fired well over when faced with the whole goal to aim at.
Four minutes later Lee Boylan shot wide from a free-kick, before Minton volleyed an effort wide. It was the lively Minton who gave the home side the lead though, after twelve minutes. Beating the offside trap the midfielder kept his cool to round Kevin Davies in the Aylesbury goal, and fire the ball home from an impossible looking angle. 1-0 Canvey
Whilst not looking in anyway threatening going forward, the Ducks were defending resolutely. It had to be that way as Canvey were attacking at will, and could easily have been four up at the break.
Davies made the first of many great saves, as the ball ricocheted nastily in the area, flying towards the top corner. Duffy had a deflected shot helf by the Aylesbury number 1, before a deflected effort was excellently tipped wide.
Canvey had another couple of efforts before half time: Gavin Cowan headed a free-kick over the bar, and Davies made another good stop from an attacker.
Half-time: Canvey Island 1-0 Aylesbury United
The second half saw Kevin Wilson take up position in the dugout, and he seemed to have the desired effect on the players, as performances improved dramatically. Unfortunately, the lack of chances were making a turnaround look unlikely.
Ryan Wiffin replaced Pritchard early into the half, but he too couldn't affect the game. After a bright opening fifteen minutes or so, Canvey started to creep back into the game. Midgley shot well over when well placed, before another good chance was volleyed wide.
Aylesbury had their first shot at goal after almost an hour played. Alex Stanley cut inside from the left flank, and fired a long distance drive, which was easily held by Danny Potter.
At the other end Gregory forced himself goallside of his marker, but could only shoot wide. Another effort was then headed wide following some good work by John Kennedy.
Aylesbury's best chance of the match came soon after, and fell to Ryan Wiffin. Rory Hunter won the ball in midfield, and burst forwards before feeding Wiffin. The lanky striker brought the ball down, but could only fire his half-volley wide of the post. Stanley then shot an ambitious 35-yard free-kick over the bar.
Just as it looked remotely possible that the Ducks could equalise, Canvey doubled their lead. An Aylesbury throw-in was seized upon by Canvey, and they raced away before Gregory scored. 2-0 Canvey
The game was now well and truly dead and buried, and a 2-0 scoreline would have been a fair reflection of the game. Canvey had other ideas though, and added to their scoreline in the 77th minute as Ollie Berquez converted a deep cross. 3-0 Canvey
Canvey scored another late into injury time, as Berquez scored his second with a good finish, to make the score a flattering 4-0 Canvey win.
