The match was a drab affair in the first half, as both sides struggled to keep the ball in the opening few minutes. Sutton delivered a warning though, in the fourteenth minute, as Nick Bailey turned sharply and volleyed over.
From the resulting corner Sutton took the lead, in somewhat controversial circumstances. The ball was swung in and taken by Kevin Davies, but the keeper spilled under pressure. Amongst cries of foul Matt Fowler was on hand to turn the ball into the net. 1-0 Sutton
Aylesbury were rarely a threat, and it was only the visitors who looked like scoring for much of the half. Jon Nurse might have done better after being put through by a delightful through ball. His effort was straight at Davies, and although it rebounded, Nurse put the follow-up over the bar.
Another great ball whipped in with pace saw the unmarked Paul Honey send a header over the bar.
Aylesbury then had a rare attack of their own, the sole effort of the half from the Ducks. Debutant Ashley Hilton raced down the right-flank, and delivered an excellent ball which was headed over by Paul Edgeworth.
Two minutes before half-time Sutton scored a second, which was a real blow for the Ducks. The home defence dallied about with the ball on the edge of their area, and conceded a throw-in deep in their territory. Said throw was eventually crossed deep to the back post, where Fowler could nod the ball home. 2-0 Sutton
Half-time: Aylesbury 0-2 Sutton
Sutton started the second half in determined fashion, as they seeked to increase their lead from the outset, and Aylesbury struggled to match their pace. After just three minutes a dangerous low cross was nearly turned into his own net by John Winter. Ryan Palmer came forward and tried an ambitious long-shot which was closer to the corner flag than goal.
If it wasn't already, the game was well and truly settled, as Sutton and Fowler scored their third goal. Some comical defending saw the ball not cleared on the edge of the box, and Fowler swung his foot at it, and saw a delightful effort fly over Davies and into the net. 3-0 Sutton
Five minutes later he was at it again. After being played through Fowler easily scored past Davies, to net his fourth of the night. 4-0 Sutton
Fowler went close again with a shot on the turn, but this time his effort was easily held by Davies. Another rare advance forward by the Ducks only resulted in Paul Edgeworth receiving a yellow card for challenging the keeper.
A corner caused problems in the Aylesbury defence, as Davies was called upon to tip the ball over for another corner. This time the ball was whipped in, and volleyed home from close range by Jon Nurse, after Aylesbury failed to clear their lines. 5-0 Sutton
Sutton were only going to add to their lead in the closing stages of the match, and Fowler saw his shot blocked by Hilton, before an effort was blocked off the line following a good run by Nurse. A header from a corner was then tipped over by Davies.
Matt Fowler capped an excellent night for himself in stoppage time by popping up to send home his fifth, and Sutton's sixth goal. 6-0 Sutton
