The game began in lively fashion, with both sides fashioning chances in the opening fifteen minutes. Burnham had an effort held, having arrived at the far post, and Powles came forward from right-back to fire in a left-footed strike wide of goal.
Five minutes later and Daniel Mead broke forward on his first of many forays down the left flank. His low ball was left by Leon Gutzmore, falling to Neil Champelovier, who placed the ball into the net to give Aylesbury the lead. 1-0 Aylesbury
Stotfold tried to hit back immediately, with former St. Albans midfield man Greg Deacon having a shot superbly turned wide by Jack Rashid. From the resulting corner Scott Grant headed towards the corner of the net, but again Rashid managed to make the save. Deacon had another shot saved shortly after, with Rashid a busy man.
The game settled down after the early flurry of activity, and Aylesbury began to play the passing game missing in the last few matches. Paul Edgeworth, having his best game for a while, laid the ball to Dean Cracknell, who turned sharply and fired over. Cracknell then made his own opportunity, battling to win the ball and shooting wide.
On thirty-five minutes Aylesbury had a perfectly valid second goal inexplicably ruled out by the linesman of the near side. Cracknell left two defenders for dead inside the area, and cut the ball back for Edgeworth, who coolly finished into the net. But the linesman raised his flag - for what remains a mystery.
Two minutes later though, Aylesbury did net for a second time, the goal a product of a superb team move. Jack Rashid threw the ball out to Dean Powles, who fed Leon Gutzmore down the right-flank. The striker then delivered a fine cross which Edgeworth hit high into the goal. 2-0 Aylesbury
There was time for further efforts before half-time, as Matt Hayward had a low effort blocked in the area. Some superb link-up play between Cracknell and Gutzmore released the latter, but his final shot was deflected wide.
Half-time: Aylesbury 2-0 Stotfold
Stotfold sent on former Man Utd striker Graeme Tomlinson (who Aylesbury tried to sign last season) to boost their second half prospects, and he showed he retains some of his skill, as he sent a shot wide early in the half.
Paul Garrett executed a well-struck volley soon after, which hit the side-netting, and Tomlinson headed wide a ball by Lee Allinson, as Stotfold made all the early running.
As Stotfold pressed forward, Aylesbury began to exploit the spaces being left, and counter-attacked well. A great move down the left saw Mead break away, and he played the ball across the Gutzmore in acres of space. The ball was then squared for Paul Lamb, but his effort lacked power or direction and trickled wide.
Midway through the second half the Ducks scored their third, although it was somewhat against the run of play, with Stotfold having large chunks of posession against a tiring Aylesbury. A quickly taken free-kick was spread to Mead on the left, and he delivered a perfect cross which was met by a textbook Edgeworth header. 3-0 Aylesbury
Another pair of good chances for Stotfold went wide, first from Tomlinson, then from Garrett who volleyed into the side-netting for the second time of the night, before Aylesbury added a fourth.
Substitute Danny Gray was released by Cracknell on another counter-attack from the home side, and having beaten the last defender Gray released an unstoppable shot from all of 25-yards. 4-0 Aylesbury
Gray's strike was worth the entrance fee alone, but the match was far from over. With over ten minutes remaining, Stotfold got a richly deserved goal. Justin Griffith saw his shot, after some persistant work up front, blocked on the line, but scorer of Saturday's early goal Gary Walker managed to force home the rebound. 4-1 Aylesbury
Stotfold still weren't finished, and having spent much of the second half in posession of the ball, and indeed the final fifteen minutes camped around the Ducks' penalty area, they further reduced the deficit in stoppage time. It was Walker again, who when not closed down, fired into the back of the net. 4-2 Aylesbury
This was the last kick of the game though, and it's Aylesbury who progress to the 3rd Qualifying Round and a tie against Ashford Town (Middx).
