A good start from the Ducks resulted in some early pressure, with crosses and shot being blocked. It all came to nothing, ultimately ending in disappointment though, as Solihull took the lead against the run of play. Kai Ridley slipped, allowing Paul Danks to collect the ball. Running towards goal he beat Ridley again, before firing an unstoppable shot into the top corner. 1-0 Solihull
Aylesbury had a chance to hit back quickly, as a deep free-kick was punched by Gayle as far as Dean Powles, but his effort went wide of the goal.
Solihull thought they should have had a penalty midway through the half. With two opposition players colliding in midfield, a huge gap appeared in the middle of United's team, and with Morton Titterton running free he went down under the challenge of the onrushing Jack Rashid. The referee waved play-on to Solihull's despair.
Jamie Petty had a shot saved by Rashid, under pressure, and Powles headed wide a good cross from Smeathers. Another great delivery, this time from the left, found the late run of Edgeworth minutes later, but he could only place his header wide, as the game bagan to open up.
Before half-time the home side were dominant, but couldn't find the back of the net. Edgeworth had a long-range effort well wide, and Colin Baker's positive surge only resulted in a weak effort which was easily held by Gayle.
Solihull had the last say of the half though, heading a cross against the post.
Half-time: Aylesbury 0-1 Solihull
The first twenty-five minutes of the second half was a completely different story though, as Aylesbury emeged resurgent, full of belief and purpose. Their play was neat and precise, and they opened Solihull up time and time again.
It took just two minutes for the equaliser to come. A free-kick was lofted in, flicked on by Matt Hayward, and the resulting penalty area scramble was eventually turned into a goal by Dean Cracknell. 1-1
Cracknell was evidently lifted by his goal, and suddenly full of positive running. His ambitious effort soon after was always going well over the bar though. Another great move soon followed - Paul Edgeworth moving the ball out wide to Baker, and the youngster's first time shot was well dealt with by Gayle.
After Paul Lamb had a long-shot saved, Aylesbury found themselves lucky not to have conceded a goal. A free-kick deflected off the wall and bounced down off the crossbar - then the follow-up headed effort also hit the bar and bounced out. A real let-off for the Ducks.
It was all forgotten two minutes later though, as United completed the comeback with their second goal. An excellent ball released Cracknell down the right, and his cross was headed goalwards by Edgeworth, and well saved by Gayle. Williams was following up though, to calmly score.2-1 Aylesbury
It wasn't over yet though, and Solihull were determined to fight to the end. A deflected shot went wide for a corner, and substitute Matt Hawker headed poorly over the bar when unchallenged. At the other end Matt Hayward should have done better, meeting a Lamb free-kick with his head.
As the game entered the last ten-minutes there were nervy moments a plenty for the Ducks, but in general the defence was looking solid. Repeatedly they saw off Solihull's attacking threats, but a better team could well have punished them. Guy Hadland had a good chance, having wriggled his way into the box, but was determined to walk the ball into the goal instead of shooting, and was eventually crowded out.
Then right at the death Jack Rashid yet again made himself a hero. Adam Cooper's fierce strike was destined only for the top corner, but the Aylesbury stopper extended himself to make a fabulous save.
The referee finally blew full-time on a pulsating encounter, and the Ducks can be proud of their second half display, which turned the match on its head. The draw for the next round will be made this Monday.
