The game took a while to get going, with neither keeper called into serious action until Neil Midgeley?s shot bobbled through to Jack Rashid in Aylesbury?s goal.
Canvey had a major scare just past the half hour mark. Leon Gutzmore received Paul Lamb?s free-kick, twice had shots blocked, before seeing another cross-goal effort saved by Danny Potter. The rebound was then cleared off the line having been fired in by Matt Hayward.
Gavin Jaggard wasted two good opportunities for Aylesbury, the first having been presented to him after Gutzmore seized upon a loose pass and played the ball through. The second saw Paul Edgeworth run down the right, flight a pass to Colin Baker who laid in Jaggard, but he mis-hit his shot again.
Canvey were clinging onto their hold in the game as the half came to a close. The Ducks forced three successive corners which all asked questions but nothing more. Full-back Daniel Mead hit a free-kick over the bar and Gutzmore hit the side-netting with a pot-shot, but it remained goal-less at the interval.
The home side never quite reached the same level in the second half; indeed the game became scrappier which suited the visitors, with Aylesbury unable to find their stride.
It was a substitution which was to change the course of the game though ? talisman Jeff Minton replaced Tom Williamson on the hour mark, and tried his luck straight away with a fierce strike that went over the bar.
Canvey hit the bar from a corner as their dominance began to grow, and substitute Junior McDougald headed an easy chance embarrassingly wide.
Predictably, it was Minton who scored the winner, on 78 minutes. Mario Noto found the space on the left-wing, and picked out Minton with a low-cross that was easily converted.
Aylesbury were unable to mount a recovery operation, and at times looked exhausted after their earlier efforts. The final whistle brought relief for Canvey, and disappointment for the Ducks, who can look to bounce back with a good win against Bracknell on Tuesday.
