Danny Nicholls' tactics - starting with a 4-5-1 formation - were the difference, with the Ducks nigh impossible to break down throughout the game. Matt Hayward and Liam Folds were imperious in defence, and Jamie Kearns ran the midfield on his full debut.
The game began slowly, with the away side cautiously going about their business in the opening exchanges. It took 16 minutes before the first chance, Andrew Hodges forced to clear a headed effort off the goal-line. Minutes later uncertainty from Jack Rashid resulted in a lobbed shot dropping wide of the far post, and a flowing move from Hednesford finished with Rashid diving to save Lee Williams' low strike.
Grant Beckett ended Hednesford's spell of pressure with a training ground free-kick routine which was fired straight at Rashid, before United themselves pressed forward.
In their first real chance of the game, Drew Roberts ran onto Edgeworth's flick-on, cut inside but saw his shot deflected wide.
Half-time: Hednesford 0-0 Aylesbury
The second period began with a great chance for the Pitmen to open the scoring. Beckett arrived at the far-post to bring down an overhit cross, but took far too long in getting his shot away, and was blocked by Hodges.
The game was then swung in Aylesbury's favour as the Ducks took the lead. The excellent Kearns had a shot from distance blocked, and as the ball rebounded to Daniel French he had no hesitation in lashing a 25-yard volley goalwards. Ryan Young, slightly off his goal-line, stumbled backwards and couldn't keep the ball from hitting the back of the net in spectacular style. 1-0 Aylesbury
Aylesbury looked to double their lead shortly afterwards when Hayward powered a header over the bar. At the other end player/manager Chris Brindley went close, glancing a header over the bar from Williams' free-kick.
Brindley had another effort, this time with his boot, but the ball richocheted wide. Winger French then headed over for Aylesbury after a great run from Kearns, who spread the ball wide for Baker to chip the ball across.
Hayward had another header from a corner denied, this time by goalkeeper Yound who dived on his line to hold onto the ball.
In the 90th minute the Ducks scored a second goal to round-off an excellent afternoon's work. Neat link-up between Edgeworth and Baker on the right-flank brought about the latter playing in Roberts, who superbly sidestepped the last defender, fooled the keeper and rolled the ball into the empty net. 2-0 Aylesbury
This was the final action of the game, a game which could turn out to be crucial as Aylesbury look to an exciting climax to their season.
