The Chairboys started the match brightly, and Adrian Caceres hit two early efforts wide of the left-hand post, the second hitting the stantion behind the goal, before Aylesbury managed to get to grips with the game.
Drew Roberts sent a ball across the box for Gavin Jaggard, and he had time to take a touch, but his poor effort was easily saved by Steve Williams. Williams was equally up to the task of fielding Paul Edgeworth's shot, which was weak, minutes later.
Kearns had a wayward effort, and Roberts burst through and took an early pot-shot at goal, which also missed the target, as United continued to create chances against their rivals.
Aylesbury again went close after twenty-four minutes. Good work down the left by Daniel Mead saw the ever-present full-back cut inside and deliver a right-footed cross which Jaggard was a whisker away from connecting with at the far-post. Andrew Hodges headed the resultant corner over the bar.
After Fox had fired wide from Wycombe, defender Stuart Nethercott made an excellent block to stop Jaggard's shot after the former Hitchin man had been played in by winger Daniel French.
Roberts had a weak effort comfortably held by Williams, before the best chance of the half fell in the closing minutes to Jaggard. Great play by Ryan Doherty saw him beat his man in the area and cut the ball back for Jaggard, but his finish was very poor and trickled through to the goalkeeper, to ensure a goal-less first half.
Half-time: Wycombe 0-0 Aylesbury
Wycombe needed the raise their game in the second-half, having been forced back by their lower league opponents, and they duly obliged. Edgeworth had a good effort well claimed by Williams, before the Blues began to turn the screw.
Jonny Dixon dribbled his way into the box, but saw his eventual effort blocked, and Russell Martin headed a corner-kick over. Jack Rashid then extended himself for his first meaningful save of the game, to deny Caceres' fierce low effort.
Wycombe were determined to make the breakthrough though, and they did so after 53 minutes. The impressive Martin cut inside from the right-flank and fired in an unstoppable low shot to open the scoring. 1-0 Wycombe
Jaggard spurned another opportunity for the Green & Whites, heading over Doherty's excellent cross, and Roberts also misplaced a header as United looked to hit back.
It was Wanderers who scored instead, doubling their advantage. After Rashid made a good stop to deny Caceres, the ball was worked back into the area and Kieron Gradwell was on hand to force the ball home following a mix-up between Rashid and Jaggard. 2-0 Wycombe
The two-goal cushion lasted just three minutes as Aylesbury responded in the best possible manner. Drew Roberts nipped in onto a good ball to lob the goalkeeper superbly, and become the first Aylesbury player to score at a Football League ground in more than nine years. 2-1 Wycombe
Disaster almost struck two minutes later, as Hodges nearly scored a calamitous own-goal. Attempting to pass the ball back to his goalkeeper, his mis-placed kick rolled agonisingly close to the near-post and out of play.
Back in the game, and urged on by the excellent travelling supporters, Aylesbury pressed on looking for an equaliser. A Mead low cross was nearly turned home by a defender, and substitute Colin Baker had a volley held by Williams.
Then came the moment when most people in the ground thought United had levelled things up. Baker used his pace to sprint clear of the Wycombe backline, and with only Williams to beat he went for the far-post, but the ball rolled excrutiatingly wide. He can only have been inches away from goal.
Instead, the spectators witnessed a truely bizarrer incident. Following a break for an injured player, Jonny Dixon lined up to resume play. Instead of tapping the ball back to Rashid, the former Aldershot striker launched the ball downfield, and everybody watched in bewilderment as the ball flew into the back of the net. As a perfectly legitimate goal, the referee couldn't disallow the effort, and Dixon's half-way line strike stood. 3-1 Wycombe
Credit to the hosts, in the utmost sporting manner they allowed Drew Roberts to walk the ball in straight from kick-off, to bring the deficit back to one goal. 3-2 Wycombe
With under ten-minutes remaining, Aylesbury desperately tried to nick an equaliser. French was played through, but his shot summed up the Ducks' afternoon in front of goal - lacking.
Finally, Neil Lazarus had a strong curling effort well plucked out of the air by Williams, and that was that.
Wycombe stepped up to collect their 26th Berks & Bucks Senior Cup, and Aylesbury collected their runners-up medals. No player can be disappointed with the commitment they showed this afternoon, but in the end the team that took their chances won the game.
