United Ladies recorded the biggest FA Cup win in their history, in terms of results, on Sunday as they battled famously to a 1-0 win in deepest Oxfordshire.
Carterton are two leagues higher than the Ducks plying their trade in the Southern Region Premier Division but the Ladies in green were never overawed and it came as no surprise when Nicola Hunt thrashed in the winner with twenty minutes remaining.
The game had started fairly slowly on a baking hot and sunny afternoon, with honours fairly even. The home side had the first of the chances but keeper Vicky Taylor dealt with the threat before Kerry Naisbitt found herself in space but her shot was blocked.
Nicola Hunt had three shots saved in succession by the Carterton keeper and Laura Warmbier had an effort scuffed wide. At the other end the Aylesbury defence held firm with Beth Harris clearing off the line before Catriona Cameron had a long range effort saved for United.
The cat and mouse continued after the break as both teams forged and then squandered openings. Vicky Taylor was forced to save in the opening minute of the half while at the other end Sakura Fachiri burst clear but shot wide from an angle.
The deadlock was finally broken on seventy minutes when Fachiri play in an inch perfect ball for Nicola Hunt. Last season?s topscorer hit a low hard shot which the keeper managed to scoop straight back into her path. The green goal machine made no mistake at the second attempt firing the ball home, to be swamped by delighted team mates.
Carterton stepped up the pressure and Vicky Taylor pulled off a magnificent one handed save from a looping mis-hit shot to keep her side in the game.
The last ten minutes were end to end as the home side looked for the equaliser and United then had the opportunity to breakaway.
Hunt and Naisbitt both had chances and Carterton shot wide twice before the Ducks almost snatched a second when substitute Kerry Rickard was a fraction away from getting her head to an inswinging Lucy Ilic free kick.
In the dying seconds the Oxfordshire side once again shot wide and as the whistle blew the reality of this tremendous result began to sink in. The Ladies not only earn ?100 for the victory they now have a plum home tie against Wycombe Wanderers on September 24th.
