Aylesbury were forced into a midfield rejig - missing Liam Smyth and Ross Taylor - so manager Tony Thompson handed first starts of the season to Aston Goss and Jamie O'Grady, whilst Emmanuel Adeseko reclaimed a place in the team up front and new signing Nathan Graham was on the bench.
Despite a bright start by Aylesbury, it was Romulus who had the early chances. After nine minutes Jack Sillitoe was uncertain when coming to meet a long kick and after a striker found himself in on goal Nathan Liburd was on hand to clear the ball off the line.
Two minutes later Tyrone Fagan was played in but again found his shot blocked, Liburd again to the rescue.
United took the lead on 21 minutes, a goal somewhat gifted to them by some awful Romulus defending. A long free kick was tamely swotted away by keeper Matty Harris, and then headed back into danger by his covering defender, where first Adesoko took a swipe at the ball but couldn't make clean contact, then Carl Kavanagh managed to squeeze the ball home. 1-0 Aylesbury
The lead was doubled within ten minutes, and even more of a howler than the first. Another long free kick seemed to be an easy claim for Harris, but he stumbled into his goal and carried the ball over his line for an own goal. 2-0 Aylesbury
Aston Goss was lively on the left throughout the game, and he twisted and turned his man before going for goal as Aylesbury looked for a third, but his low effort was held by Harris.
Romulus' own left winger Lei Brown fancied his chances from a free kick, but the powerful shot was well blocked by the wall, but only after Brown had taken an effort too quickly for the referee's liking, which Sillitoe had got down well to save.
Sam Swonnel came agonisingly close to a third for United when he made space for himself in the area and beat Harris with a delicate chip that shaved the outside of the post.
The Ducks ended the half under pressure, a high inswinging free kick from Brown caused havoc in the box, and Romulus forced three corners which the Ducks dealt with successfully.
The start of the second half was a calmer affair, and as the stifling heat began to take it's toll the game began to open up more as defences tired.
A long ball tossed into the box was won in the air by Adesoko and flicked on where O'Grady headed wide of the target.
Goss then went close again to finding the net when he rose and headed Liburd's flighted ball just over the bar.
Aylesbury continued to press for a third, and a dangerous corner had to be headed over his own bar by Lee Hatfield, and from the subsequent delivery Roni Joe touched the ball wide at the far post.
Romulus brought themselves back into the game 15 minutes from the end when they scored with the best move of the match. The ball was worked slickly into the box and laid off into the path of Ashley Robinson whose shot found the bottom corner. 2-1 Aylesbury
A similarly good move from United suggested they weren't ready to lie down though, and resulted in O'Grady putting a great cross into the box that Joe headed goalwards but didn't have the power to beat Harris.
The Roms' best chance of equalising fell to Fagan late on when he found himself through, but Sillitoe did a good job of making himself big and Fagan's lobbed effort dropped wide.
In the final minutes of the game Swonnel saw a good effort blocked, but the full time whistle was soon blown and it was relief all round for Aylesbury as they finally got off the mark for the season.
