The game was as uninspiring as matches against Leighton typically are, and was particularly frustrating for United's lack of attacking threat as the game wore on.
The decent sized Bank Holiday had to wait a while for proceedings to come to life, with little action taking place inside the first quarter of an hour until the Reds took the lead with the game?s first attack.
A ball out of defence found Hatch running through and he got the better of Mark Toms before finishing well past Sillitoe. 1-0 Leighton
Chances were few and far between for both sides with Leon Cashman blazing well over the bar having been put in by a fine pass from Sam Chapman, whilst Aylesbury?s first effort came from the boot of James Nash whose free-kick from the corner of the area hit Hatch in the box.
United found an equaliser on 25 minutes with a well taken goal by youngster Lewis McBride. Nash?s free-kick delivery was challenged for by Taylor with the ball falling to McBride who struck a fine shot which nestled into the bottom corner. 1-1
James McNulty nearly struck back immediately for Leighton with an effort from the edge of the box which flashed just wide just a minute later.
Aylesbury then had Nash to thank for keeping the Reds at bay when he made a great block in the box from Hatch?s shot after Gallant had done well at the byline in holding up the ball before cutting it back for his strike partner.
The remainder of the half continued to be an even affair, but it was United who came closest to scoring when a rasping 25-yard drive from Tyrone Taylor smashed against the crossbar after Montgomery?s cross had only been half cleared, and from the follow up effort McBride could only fire over.
Leighton had the final say of the opening period when the most dangerous man on the pitch, Hatch, threatened again with a half-volley which flashed over the target as the ball sat up nicely for him.
Half-time: Leighton 1-1 Aylesbury
The Ducks made the worst possible start to the second half, as Hatch re-established his side?s lead after just two minutes. Sillitoe horrendously miscued a clearance straight to Hatch who had an easy task of rolling the ball into the net. 2-1 Leighton
It was the second time this season that Hatch had profited from a Sillitoe blunder, but it was a deserved goal as Aylesbury had made a poor start to the half with McNulty having earlier half-volleyed narrowly past the post, and ex-United man Ben Gallant also testing the goalkeeper with a low effort.
Unfortunately things weren?t to improve much for the Ducks as they struggled to get near the hosts penalty area.
Richard Pringle was having another fruitless afternoon in attack and after being booked on the hour mark after the referee took exception to his aerial challenging, he was eventually replaced by Ashley Harewood but there was little improvement.
Leighton had another good chance to extend their lead when Stuart Deaton picked out McNulty with a searching pass from deep, the Reds? captain heading wide when he had more time than he probably realised.
It took another twelve minutes of the slow moving match before the next chance came and went, Gallant getting on the end of Lee Clark?s long kick downfield and trying his luck with a quick snapshot which hit the side netting.
Two minutes later Aylesbury finally mustered their first attempt of the second half when Ayodele played in McBride and his shot appeared to be heading for goal only to be blocked in the area.
Inside the final ten minutes Harewood curled a free-kick just over the bar, before getting in ahead of the stranded Clark 90 seconds later and lobbing the ball towards goal but couldn?t find the target.
Instead, it was Leighton who showed more threat in stoppage time when the pace of substitute Walker took him away down the right and his dangerous ball into the box had to be carefully dealt with on the goal line by Ashleigh James with Gallant in close attendance.
Jack Wood summed up United?s frustrations late on with an exasperated, reckless lunge which brought about a booking as Leighton shut up shop as they had done since scoring the second goal.
An end to the match soon came about and an end to what had been a thoroughly disappointing and largely frustrating Easter weekend of matches.
