Aylesbury successfully negotiated through their first ever Extra Preliminary round tie in the FA Cup with captain Paul Edgeworth leading the way with two goals in his first outing since returning to the club.

As Aylesbury?s biggest ?name? signing of the summer, Edgeworth will be a crucial player for his side and he showed just what the Ducks had been missing with his excellent awareness and positioning putting him on hand to score a brace.

For the match, United reverted to a more standard 4-4-2 system with Edgeworth coming in for the unavailable Mark Toms.

They made a slow start to proceedings though and had Will Smith to thank for a crucial penalty area block five minutes in when he denied James Peters after Nathan Moulton?s backheel released him. The same player then had another shot blocked within two minutes.

Aylesbury had little to show in the opening ten minutes, although Lea Coulter was looking lively once again and he was rather cynically taken out having beaten Scott Rennie, but the referee felt no further retribution than a free-kick was necessary.

Langford threatened again when Connor Waite turned smartly on the edge of the area but could only hammer the ball well over the target.

The home side should have been ahead on the quarter hour mark when a right sided corner kick was headed into the path of Luke Nicholl, but when completely unmarked he placed his header way over the bar.

It was a huge let off for the Ducks and marked something of a turning point as they began to put their hosts under some pressure for the first time in the game, with Edgeworth hitting an ambitious 40-yarder which caused Scott Waters no problem.

There was to be no denying Edgeworth though and midway through the first half he gave his side the lead when he made the perfect run to get on the end of Garcia?s re-delivered cross and head the ball past Waters - who might have done better in keeping the ball out. 1-0 Langford

The Reds looked to quickly get back into proceedings and United had a couple of close scrapes in the 26th minute when firstly a deep free-kick flicked off Edgeworth and skimmed over the top of the bar. From the resulting corner the ball flashed through the crowded box where Angus Stewart somehow failed to make contact that surely would have resulted in a certain goal.

But the remainder of the half well and truly belonged to the Ducks. After a spell of penalty area pinball Lea Coulter saw a shot blocked superbly by Scotney who threw his body at the ball to deflect it just past the upright. Mullholland should have scored from the corner when the giant defender inexplicably went unnoticed in the box to earn himself a free-header which he could only put wide.

As the constant pressure continued, Edgeworth just missed with a near-post flicked header from Smith?s corner kick, then Carl Clay had a long range effort deflected wide which led to a penalty shout from yet another corner.

The half came to an end in similar fashion, but Langford resisted conceding a second goal as Pringle headed wide as did Edgeworth in stoppage time following a Pringle cross as a ?half of two halves? ended with Aylesbury well on top.

United could well have been three goals to the good by the interval, and as Langford threatened early on when Peters blasted over the bar, their supporters were fearing those missed chances would come back to haunt the greens.

Any such worries were soon put to bed though as Aylesbury opened up a two-goal advantage in the 50th minute. Langford had no answer to Coulter throughout the game, and as Pringle set him away he intelligently played a low ball across the area from the by line where Paul Donnelly got himself in an awful mess trying to clear, and Edgeworth was only too happy to oblige when presented with an open goal from 3-yards out. 2-0 Aylesbury

A third might have arrived moments later when the now rampant Ducks won the ball back through Garcia?s persistence, and he played in fellow midfielder Jack Wood who unfortunately skied his finish.

Aylesbury lost the services of Carl Clay who was injured in a nasty looking challenge, to be replaced by Craig Townsend for his debut.

The home side were cut apart once again in the 63rd minute when Smith was set away down the left and his clever ball across the box found Coulter, whose shot was well saved by Waters.

It was debutant Townsend who turned out to be the most unlikely of scorers, as the defensive midfielder added a third for the Ducks in the 73rd minute with a spectacular first time strike from 25-yards as the ball fell to him. 3-0 Aylesbury

Chances kept coming as Aylesbury continued their pressure on a shell-shocked Langford defence. Coulter outpaced the defence yet again to fashion himself a shooting opportunity, but was denied by another good save from Waters? legs.

Substitute Leon Gordon then also easily got away from the defence before setting up Wood who was also denied by a similar save from the home custodian, before Gordon followed that up with a header wide at the far post from Townsend?s delivery.

Had it not been for a combination of Waters and some wasteful finishing, the Ducks could have had five or six, and Gordon rounded off his eventful cameo by having a goal disallowed after tapping in Edgeworth?s deflected effort in a close range offside position.

Jack Sillitoe had been a spectator for the second half, but he was finally called into action a minute from time when Sean Pennie wound up a long range effort which was well worth a go, but well fielded by the Aylesbury number one.

Unfortunately the result ? which had looked set to be a straightforward and comprehensive victory for the Ducks ? was somewhat soured by a moment of madness from Sillitoe in stoppage time.

Having raced from his line to claim a through ball, he took exception to the attacker?s challenge on him and aimed a petulant kick out at the Langford player when in mid air catching the ball. The incident didn?t go unnoticed by the referee who awarded a penalty and sent off Sillitoe, a decision nobody could have any complaints with.

Angus Stewart easily slotted the penalty home but it was only ever going to deny Aylesbury a clean sheet ? the result had never been in doubt after an excellent performance and a well deserved win which they can now build on.
