Following Wednesday?s impressive draw against Chalfont, the Ducks just didn?t get going and whether their efforts in that game contributed to their flat performance was debatable, but it was certainly a bitterly disappointing afternoon.
United?s threadbare squad was stretched to the limit with the unavailability of Mark Toms, meaning Jack Wood was deployed in central defence and it?s testament to the youngster?s quality that he went on to be Aylesbury?s best player of the afternoon.
Broxbourne had the first effort of the game in the eighth minute when Tony Neilson turned and went for goal, but lashed his shot well over.
The Ducks then went close on a couple of occasions as first Lea Coulter was inches away from connecting with Daniel Jones? pinpoint free kick delivery, and a minute later Jamie O?Grady ? in unfamiliar attacking territory ? drew the game?s first save as his shot was blocked low down by McWeeney.
Unfortunately that turned out to be Aylesbury?s best chance of the match, and Tony Joyce?s frustrations at his side?s inability to take what was presented to them were plain to hear, especially given another great opening, for Coulter this time, moments later. Edgeworth got the flick from O?Grady?s long throw and as the ball came to him quickly Coulter could only hook over the bar.
That was after the tricky Bradley Drisdale ? who had scored the equaliser at Bell Close when the sides met in October ? had gone close when he exhibited a bit of skill to drift past two men but could only produce a scuffed shot which was easy for Sillitoe.
Predictably, it was he who opened the scoring midway through the first half. A long ball forwards was only helped into his path by Mulholland, and he ran on before tucking the ball past Sillitoe into the bottom corner. 1-0 Broxbourne
Just six minutes later things got even worse for Aylesbury as the home side doubled their lead. O?Grady?s hurried clearance was collected by Rory Brien and he played the ball through for Tony Neilson to rifle a shot past Sillitoe. 2-0 Broxbourne
Even at that relatively early stage of the game it seemed like a long way back for Aylesbury, who were struggling to make any headway with their creative players hounded and hurried out of the game every time they received the ball.
Borough should have had a third when Watson released Drisdale again, but instead of squaring for the two waiting players in the middle he went for goal but skied his shot.
There was another opening for them seconds later when Brien played in Flint but his low shot was easily held by Sillitoe.
Just prior to the interval there were at least a couple of moments of encouragement for the beleaguered Ducks as Jones? corner kick was punched uncertainly behind for a corner kick, and from this set play Jones? inswinging ball struck the outside of the post, but it was a thoroughly disappointing first half from United?s point of view.
Half-time: Broxbourne 2-0 Aylesbury
Sillitoe had to make a good save to keep out Brien?s wind-caught swerving shot four minutes after the restart which dramatically varied in course due to the elements.
Aylesbury introduced Mickey O?Farrell for Townsend who was struggling with injury as they played the last half hour with three strikers, and although there was a slight improvement the Ducks still couldn?t make any impression on Broxbourne?s well organised defence.
In fact, it took until the very final minute before United mustered an effort on goal as Coulter drifted inside, but it was a tame final shot and was easily held by McWeeney.
Much earlier in the half there was a half chance as Mulholland levered down another Jones free kick delivery, but nobody was there to get on the end of it and it was cleared away.
But it was Broxbourne who continued to have the better of what few openings there were. The impressive Neilson brought the ball a long way forward before crashing a shot over on 67 minutes. He then followed that by cutting inside before firing in a drive which flashed just past the near post.
Jordan Watson was denied by another fine save from Sillitoe as he headed Drisdale?s cross goalwards following more good play on the wing, as the home side pressed for a third goal.
Coulter?s effort rounded off the game, and United?s frustrations came to a head in the closing seconds as both Justin Gordon and Tony Joyce were both booked for petulant dissent and late tackles respectively.
It just wasn?t Aylesbury?s day and their inconsistent start to 2011 leaves them still searching for their second win since the turn of the year.
