Town have had a turbulent season and by the end were no match for the rampant Ducks who were attacking at will in the second half and, on another day, could have doubled their scoreline.
It was a far cry from the start of the match when, despite Townsend seeing a header cleared off the line in the third minute, Aylesbury had made a sluggish start and went behind to an early goal.
A corner kick delivered from the left twice wasn’t cleared and as the ball stuck in the mud Charlie Kanaris was in the right place to fire home via a deflection. 1-0 Kentish Town
It was the visitors first meaningful attack of the match, but was also their last for some time as Aylesbury slowly began to get into their stride.
Mickey O’Farrell beat the offside trap to receive a through ball but could only produce a weak finish straight at Noonan, and a free-kick orchestrated by Edgeworth on the penalty box perimeter was charged down moments later.
The pressure was growing and in the 20th minute a classy equaliser arrived. Garcia passed square for Edgeworth who delivered a searching ball over the defence which Coulter brought down with a superb take before rifling home an angled shot past Noonan. 1-1
Equalising settled the growing frustrations Aylesbury were feeling and Townsend fired a long range shot wide whilst Baines toe-ended the ball wide on the stretch from Garcia’s cross as the Ducks probed for a second.
It was full debutant Hateley Mercer who set the wheels in motion when it came a minute later. His ball forward found O’Farrell whose touch dropped kindly for Baines to shoot left footed, with the ball rebounding straight back to him from a defender three yards from goal where he just couldn’t miss. 2-1 Aylesbury
Baines was unlucky not to have another when he drifted inside and shaped a beautiful left-footed effort which had Noonan beaten all ends up but dipped onto the top of the bar.
There was a rare Kentish Town effort ten minutes from the break as the visitors passed their way around Aylesbury with worrying ease, before working a shooting position which was put wide of the near post. It was a warning for the Ducks.
Visiting keeper Noonan had a rush of blood to the head when, having lost out in a race to the ball with Baines, he attempted a sliding tackle in the midpoint of his half, and could only watch as Baines ran the ball in but couldn’t beat the men stationed on the line.
The open nature of the game continued with Townsend helping a shot over, then James Lindsay producing a smart turn in the box as a throw in found him but his finish didn’t match and flew over the bar.
Townsend put a great chance wide from eight-yards having ridden a challenge as he made his way into the box, and O’Farrell volleyed wide as the chances continued to come.
It was Jack Wood who finally added the third right on the stroke of half time, with a goal which surpassed Coulter’s. Garcia it was who lifted the ball over the defence this time, Wood chest controlling before faintly lobbing the stranded keeper to perfection. 3-1 Aylesbury
Half-time: Aylesbury 3-1 Kentish Town
The Townies suffered a blow as key defender Marco Grandi was forced off at the break, prompting a defensive reshuffle from which point any organisation they might have once had now evaporated, and the rampant Ducks ran riot in the second half.
As early as three minutes in Acheampong, himself a half-time introduction, should have scored when he fired straight at Noonan from four-yards after Townsend had levered Garcia’s free-kick across goal.
A minute later a Baines shot screamed across goal, before the same player went clean through but bizarrely elected to try and find Coulter instead of go for goal and his pass was wayward.
He wasn’t going to try and pass again when he went one-on-one with Noonan soon afterwards, but this time drilled his low shot wide of the far post.
Quite where the visiting defence had disappeared to was anyone’s guess but Aylesbury weren’t complaining – as Baines ran through yet again and this time saw his shot clawed behind by Noonan – but they were misplacing chances at a frustrating rate.
Acheampong again was culpable from virtually on the goal line as the ball hit Noonan rather than the keeper making a save, after a corner kick was headed by Mulholland and saved in the first instance with the ball popping back to Acheampong.
Edgeworth and Mulholland both had shots blocked at a corner before Wood fired the ball wide as it came out to him, with Mulholland shooting wide at the next set piece.
Quite how United hadn’t already amassed a cricket score was the topic of debate in the stands, with Edgeworth, Mulholland, Wood and Baines all going close with various efforts coming from corner kicks and crosses.
It took until the 67th minute before Aylesbury finally troubled the back of the net again, when Baines was unceremoniously felled in the box allowing Edgeworth to step up and despatch a confident penalty. 4-1 Aylesbury
Wood was the next to threaten as he won back possession before firing in a cross-shot which drew a great save from Noonan to turn the ball wide.
Town had a few sighters at the other end as Lindsay tried his luck from outside the box on three occasions without testing Sillitoe, the last of which crashed well over the bar.
Acheampong flashed a shot wide after more good play by Coulter, before the former set up Aylesbury’s fifth. Substitute Andre Grant made a hash of trying to cut out the ball, allowing Acheampong to get to the byeline and deliver a telling ball which was turned in by Townsend – whose reward was immediate substitution! 5-1 Aylesbury
His replacement was the returning Kevin Ayodele and he nearly made an immediate impact when he set away Baines for his umpteenth clear run at goal of the afternoon, but he fired wide of the target.
Further efforts followed for Coulter and Garcia, before Ayodele did make his mark by setting up number six. Coulter raced onto his long ball forwards and produced another fine touch and finish to score. 6-1 Aylesbury
It was a good way to round of an excellent win for Aylesbury which sees them relaim fifth spot from Leverstock Green, whose match was postponed.
