As the sun shone down Aylesbury started the match disastrously as they fell behind within a minute. Indecision in the box led to an easy chance which the home side couldn’t help but capitalise on
With their renewed confidence this early set back seemed to spur the Ducks into life and they could well have been level within minutes. Suzie Cole broke free on the right wing and her shot was well turned away
United’s next opportunity came from a Kerry Naisbitt corner which found Beanie Cameron in space but the midfielder’s effort went wide
The equaliser came on 24 minutes and was very well worked. Right back Beth Harris released Suzie Cole who on reaching the touchline pulled the ball back to Gemma Franklin who made no mistake from the edge of the box
Rachel Saunders and then Cole again had opportunities saved before the visitors finally took the lead three minutes before the break
Kerry Naisbitt’s ball released Leigh Reed who lobbed the keeper from outside the box then followed her shot in just to make sure – smashing the ball home with glee
After the break it was more of the same as Suzie Cole twice went close before her fine lob came back off the post to Reed who again made no mistake from close range
Indeed the United striker should have completed her hat-trick moments later when she broke free again but her shot was slightly mis-hit and the keeper was able to save
The home side then changed formation, pushing an extra player forward, but following their own reorganisation the Ducks were able to soak up any fleeting Newbury pressure and even had chances to increase their lead with Saunders and Cole both going close
The victory brings United’s season to a close with a seventh place finish mirroring their achievement of last term but with momentum now on their side they will look for an improvement next season.
