United travelled to City Belles on Sunday in their latest Thames Valley League fixture
The Belles have just taken voluntary demotion from the Southern Region and their results to date have already indicated that they are a side to watch this season
This was a very close game from start to finish and a good deal of it was played in the middle third of the pitch with very few chances by either team
After a few early skirmishes it was Aylesbury who took the lead as their captain, Sarah Gerrard, brought the ball out of defence and passed a high ball over the top to Tara Woodward who delicately lobbed the keeper from 25 yards for her fifth goal of the season
Most of the rest of the first half passed uneventfully with Aylesbury holding a strong defensive line keeping their hosts at arms length
Katie Squire, in the Aylesbury goal, swept up any balls through the defence and had very little to do for long periods
The Milton Keynes side had a stronger period towards the end of the half with several corners
Ahead of one of those Aylesbury midfielder Holly Glover went down injured behind the goal following a heavy challenge
Manager Mark Rogers was left with no option but to bring on a replacement but the referee did not give her time to get into the box to defend the corner and as the ball came in it fell to an unmarked Belles' striker who put it into the net
Frustratingly, the half time whistle blew seconds later with the score all square
The second period was very similar to the first with both teams seeing a lot of the ball in the middle of the park
Tara Woodward had a couple more shots but overall neither keeper had a great deal to do and were never really forced to make a save
Then, just when it looked like the game was going to end in what would have been a fair 1-1 draw United were dealt a cruel blow.
With a minute remaining the City Belles winger ran down the right and swung over a lofty cross which somehow unjustly managed to bend into the far top corner of the Aylesbury goal just out of the reach of a despairing keeper
It was a very close game which could have gone either way and probably should have ended with a draw but that's the joy and agony of football!
