That was in spite of a good start and fourth minute goal by Aylesbury, as the Ducks found themselves dominated by a physical, experienced Greenbacks team and the stoppage time dismissal of a frustrated Lewis Putman compounded their misery further.
It was the visitors who had a good chance to go ahead in the first minute when a good ball into the box from Daniel Creaney found David Blenkinsopp, who could only flick his header wide.
Instead, Aylesbury’s first foray into opposition territory yielded an opener, Jake Bewley’s corner kick floated over the goalkeeper where it was met cleanly by Jack Wood who headed home his fifth goal of the season. 1-0 Aylesbury
The Ducks were getting plenty of joy from corner kicks in the opening stages, another three minutes later half cleared to Greg Williams who could only shoot over, and then Steve Hatch meeting a third Bewley delivery in the 10th minute but only able to direct the ball wide having appeared to make contact with his shoulder.
From there on in things began to go downhill for Aylesbury, starting with Lea Coulter being injured by a heavy challenge and having to be replaced by Ben Baines.
A free kick in a decent position on the corner of the box was wasted by Putman shooting well over the bar, and Bedworth equalised two minutes later. A poor backpass was seized on by the alert Blenkinsopp who nipped in ahead of Tahj Bell to squeeze the ball home. 1-1
Blenkinsopp was then considered in some quarters rather lucky to escape with a yellow card for an extremely late, game-ending tackle on Shane Wood, as the senior Wood brother became the second injury victim of the afternoon and Lee Grace came on in his place.
The enforced changes had a detrimental effect on Aylesbury’s early shape and organisation, and Bedworth took full advantage as they quickly asserted control on proceedings with a second goal. Some excellent, neat approach work ended with Creaney firing an accurate, low shot diagonally across goal into the bottom corner. 2-1 Bedworth
A minute later and substitute Grace was blocking a close range shot from veteran defender Mark Albrighton as the Greenbacks enjoyed a successful set piece of their own, the initial corner kick delivery blocked on the line by the same player before Albrighton pounced on the rebound.
Seven minutes before half time and the lead was extended with another well taken goal. Ashley Robinson outjumped Tinashe Chabata to guide the ball into the path of the prolific Daniel Dubidat and the former Hinckley man cracked home an unstoppable shot. 3-1 Bedworth
Aylesbury tried to pull a goal back before the break but good goalkeeping from Denham Hinds saw him hold onto a Jake Bewley cross, and then a block from the superb Chris Tullin kept Lewis Putman at bay after he had forced his way into the box and pulled the trigger.
The Greenbacks might well have added a fourth in stoppage time but Dubidat placed his shot wide after the ball had come to him when Blenkinsopp horribly miscued from a square pass.
Half-time: Aylesbury 1-3 Bedworth
The second half started with Bedworth still on top, Robinson turning but firing a wayward shot well off target, and then a flowing move down the right seeing the ball played into Blenkinsopp whose acrobatic finish was well saved by Bell.
Anything Aylesbury did have to offer was well defended by a well organised defence, as Tullin repelled Putman again from Jack Wood’s pass, although they remained susceptible at set pieces but Blackett headed Bewley’s corner wide at the near post.
Bewley himself then had a chance but blazed well over the bar having briefly been released on goal.
Hinds was twice called into action when Williams shot straight at him having been teed up by Blackett, and then having to punch out Bewley’s on target free kick, and Bell was also busy between the sticks as he made another good stop to deny Creaney just before.
There was nothing the Bermudan international could do to keep out Bedworth’s fourth though, coming eleven minutes before the end. Aylesbury were punished for a stray pass, with the Greenbacks quickly breaking downfield where Ashmore cracked home yet another thumping shot – his first for the club.4-1 Bedworth
The closing stages saw Bewley fire another shot over the bar, whilst Dubidat was also off target having gone on a long run.
Stoppage time then saw Putman shown a straight red card for his poor choice of words directed at referee Mr Mackenzie, completing a thoroughly disappointing afternoon for the Ducks, who must now pick themselves up ahead of their Berks & Bucks Cup semi final at Marlow and two winnable looking league games.
