Aylesbury United ended their run of 3 games without a win in style with a convincing 3-0 home win over arch rivals Aylesbury FC in their eagerly awaited Boxing Day local derby at the ASM Stadium, Thame on Monday.
Not only did it complete a season's double for Glyn Creaser's side over The Moles (following The Ducks' 1-0 away win at Haywood Way on August Bank Holiday Monday) but it saw The Ducks finally record their first home league win since a 2-1 victory over Bedford Town on 10th September.
Furthermore, it was The Ducks' first win on 26th December since a 2-1 home victory over Chesham United at Buckingham Road in 2002 and their biggest win on that date since thrashing Chesham United 5-1 at Buckingham Road back in 1994.
Meanwhile, FC's defeat sees them stretch their winless run to 3 games with The Moles now having won only 2 of their last 12 games in all competitions dating back to 29th October.
The afternoon got off to a sombre start with a one minute's silence in memory of long-standing Aylesbury United supporter Mark Edmonds, who sadly passed away from cancer on 13th December aged just 52.
The first action of note came in the 7th minute when an FC corner from the left by Alex O'Brien was punched out by Ducks keeper Zaki Oualah and after an attempted FC shot was blocked, the ball was eventually cleared out to Ducks defender Jake Bewley on the left, whose cross was dummied by Sonny French and the ball ran towards Bruno Brito inside the right of the box but Moles keeper Ashley Jenkins came out to gather with Brito closing in.
Then in the 9th minute, Ducks defender Ryan Kinnane was shown a yellow card by Essex referee Dean Skipper for a high tackle on Jamie West with O'Brien also yellow carded a minute later, presumably for something he said to the official.
What amounted to a half chance came United's way in the 12th minute when French's cross from the left saw a touch by Greg Williams before the ball was cleared.
Then at the same end in the 18th minute when a ball on the right found Brito whose back-heel found French, whose right foot shot on the turn from 20 yards went not too far wide of Jenkins' left hand post.
The hosts continued to press but the next chance of note came FC's way in the 26th minute when Daniel McAteer's throw in on the left found West who showed some trickery before finding Josh Bamford, who held the ball up before having his right foot shot on the turn deflected past Oualah's left hand post by Jack Wood for a corner.
Another chance came FC's way 2 minutes later when West won a challenge with Greg Williams on the right before crossing low to Ty Deacon, whose low right foot shot from about 13 yards was blocked by Kinnane.
Then at the other end in the 32nd minute, Ollie Hogg ran on to a low through ball down the middle before firing his low left foot shot wide of the keeper's right hand post.
The hosts went close again in the 33rd minute when Brito held off challenges from Ben Bateman and Jordan Jenkins before having his low right foot shot from just to the right of the penalty spot held by the keeper.
Then in the 35th minute with United having dominated so far, they took the lead when Brito's cross from the right squirmed across the box and eventually broke to French after a block by Jordan Jenkins, French made the most of keeper Jenkins' indecision and beat his man before sending his lob from a tight angle from the left edge of the box over the advancing keeper into his left hand corner for his 6th goal of the season in all competitions. 1-0 United
Then at the other end in the 44th minute, a half chance came FC's way when Deacon's cross from the right found West whose shot looped up in the air before being easily held by Oualah.
Then 35 seconds into added time at the end of the first half, the hosts went close to doubling their lead when Hogg's cross-cum-shot from the left was clawed over the ball by keeper Jenkins for a corner.
Half-time: Aylesbury United 1-0 Aylesbury FC
The visitors made a half time substitution with Lewis Hayden replacing Andre Olukanmi.
The first action of note in the second half saw United go 2-0 up in the 50th minute when French's cross was hooked on by Ollie Stanbridge and the ball broke to Brito inside the right of the box, whose right foot shot took a slight deflection off FC player-manager Daniel Gordon's leg on its way into the centre of the net but it was clearly Brito's goal. 2-0 United
FC went close to pulling a goal back in the 54th minute when West won the ball in midfield and beat his man before having his right foot shot from inside the box tipped over the bar by Oualah for a corner. From O'Brien's flag kick from the right, the ball eventually came out to Deacon, whose right foot shot was blocked for another corner.
There was a controversial moment in the 56th minute when a long ball over the top down the right by Hogg found Bewley and as keeper Jenkins came out to clear on the left corner of his box, Bewley's challenge left the keeper injured and requiring treatment. Bewley was eventually yellow carded in the 58th minute.
The next chance came United's way in the 60th minute when Hogg's free kick from 30 yards was held towards his top right hand corner by Jenkins.
Then at the same end in the 65th minute, Josh Baines ran through the left of midfield and a rode a challenge before having his shot from 20 yards blocked.
United then made their first change of the afternoon when Reece Cameron came on to replace Baines in the 67th minute before the hosts made another change 5 minutes later when Jordan Frederick came on for Greg Williams.
United went close again in the 75th minute when a cross from the right found Cameron, whose shot was well saved onto his right hand post by Jenkins and out for a corner.
Then at the other end in the 77th minute, a long looping pass down the middle by West found Deacon, whose right foot shot from inside the box was well beaten out by Oualah.
It was 3-0 in the 82nd minute when Cameron's corner on the left was cleared by Ben Bateman to Bewley on the left whose cross to the far post found Jack Wood, who chested the ball back to Kinnane whose on target right foot shot from just inside the box took a big deflection off Gordon to wrong-foot keeper Jenkins on its way into the net. However, it was credited to Kinnane.
3-0 United
United went close to adding to their tally in the 88th minute when Cameron had his right foot shot tipped past his right hand post by Jenkins for a corner.
The last action came just into the 2nd minute of added time at the end when French made a diagonal run before having his right foot shot fumbled wide by Jenkins.
Just 34 seconds later, the final blast of referee Skipper's whistle confirmed that United had completed the double over their arch rivals to end 2016 on a winning note.
This result left The Ducks in 11th place in the table whilst FC's defeat left them in 3rd from bottom going into 2017.
United will now no doubt look forward to their New Year Holiday Monday trip to Kidlington in good heart with the Oxfordshire side lying 5 points and 7 places below them in the table.
