After falling to a 0-1 home defeat by local rivals Thame United in their Bank Holiday Monday local derby at The Meadow, Aylesbury United’s hopes of getting back to winning ways were dashed as they crashed to their second consecutive defeat with a 1-5 defeat away to newly promoted Bromsgrove Sporting in their Evo-Stik League Southern League Division 1 Central clash in front of a 767 crowd at the Victoria Ground, Bromsgrove on Saturday.
United’s defeat by Thame had seen them go into Saturday’s trip to Worcestershire in 18th place in the table as the 7th of 7 teams all on 3 points but with an inferior goal difference.
Meanwhile, unbeaten Bromsgrove had gone into the game on the back of a 1-1 away draw at Sutton Coldfield on Bank Holiday Monday which had ended their 100% league record to leave them in 3rd place in the table, level on points with 4th placed Corby Town (with a better goal difference) but just 2 points behind joint leaders Thame and newly promoted Peterborough Sports.
The first serious clear-cut chance of note came the Ducks’ way just into the 5th minute when Sonny French fed Max Hercules on the left whose through ball on the left found Aaron Berry, who ran into the left of the box before being denied by a great tackle by Bromsgrove defender Craig Jones.
Then at the other end in the 14th minute, the hosts went close when Charlie Dowd made a diagonal run infield from right to middle and played a one-two with Richard Gregory before making a jinking run inside the box beating Jack Wood and Jake Bewley and firing his swerving right foot shot from 12 yards past Ducks keeper Archie Davis’ left hand post.
United went close in the 22nd minute when Jeanmal Prosper robbed Will Shorrock on the right before sending a low through ball on the right to Harry Jones, who ran forward into the box before having his low right foot shot from 15 yards well parried to his left by Bromsgrove keeper Jonathan Brown with the ball being cleared by Daniel Morris.
Then just into the 23rd minute, Sporting took the lead when Jack Wilson robbed Prosper deep inside the hosts’ half on the left and ran forward over the halfway line before sending a lofted cross-field ball to Dowd on the right, who took a touch to control and beat Bewley inside the right of the box on his way to the byeline before seeing his low ball across the box find Peters inside the far left of the box. He retrieved it before taking a couple of touches and turning to fire his right foot shot from 16 yards into Davis’ top left hand corner for a stunning strike. 1-0 Bromsgrove
Then right at the end of the 28th minute, it was 2-0 when Ollie Hogg was robbed in the centre circle in the Bromsgrove half by Nathan Hayward with the ball running to Dowd who took a touch before touching it to the on-running Hayward on his right 10 yards inside the Aylesbury half. He sent a lofted through ball down the middle to Peters who chested it back from just inside the box to Gregory with the ball bouncing just outside the front left of the box before Gregory ran into the box and squared to his right for Peters to fire his right foot shot from 6 yards into Davis’ left hand corner. 2-0 Bromsgrove
Then in the 36th minute, Gregory’s long cross-field ball from right to left found Shorrock who ran forward before going down under challenge from Prosper inside the left hand corner of the box but Coventry referee Alan Cox said no penalty.
Then in the 41st minute, it was 3-0 and effectively game over when Wilson won the ball on the left and ran from inside his own half beating Jones and Prosper before chipping the ball forward to Gregory, who outmuscled Wood amid a claim for handball against the United captain before rolling his right foot shot from 10 yards past the advancing Davis into the keeper’s left hand corner. 3-0 Bromsgrove
The hosts went close to adding to their lead further with the last chance of the first half just into the 44th minute when Gregory’s corner from the right to the near post found Josh Quaynor, who sent his stooping header from 6 yards over the bar.
Half-time: Bromsgrove 3-0 Aylesbury
Sporting made a change at half time with Jack Cresswell coming on to replace Hayward.
The first chance of the second half came Bromsgrove’s way in the 47th minute when a good interchange between Gregory and Peters left Peters in space in the right of the box whose right foot chip from 7 yards past the advancing Davis towards the keeper’s left hand corner looked to be going in until Wood cleared the ball off the line with a diving header.
The hosts went close again in the 53rd minute when a long forward ball from Roberts wasn’t dealt with, Gregory picked up the loose ball and although he was forced wide, he cut into the right of the box and beat one man before having his low left foot shot from 7 yards saved to his right at his left hand post by Davis.
Another chance came Bromsgrove’s way half way through the 56th minute when Gregory’s high cross-field ball from left to right found Dowd who cut in before having his shot blocked for a corner.
Just 26 seconds later (still just in the 56th minute), it was 4-0 when Quaynor’s corner from the right to the near post found Gregory whose glancing header from the right edge of the 6 yard box was blocked by Bewley, with the ball falling to Craig Jones who fired his low right foot shot from 6 yards into Davis’ right hand corner. 4-0 Bromsgrove
United made a double change immediately before the restart with Sean Coles coming on to replace Jones and Kierran Lataille coming on to replace Hogg.
Sporting made a change of their own a few seconds into the 58th minute with Jason Cowley coming on to replace Gregory.
A chance came Aylesbury’s way in the 60th minute when Hercules sent his right foot free kick from 25 yards wide of Brown’s right hand post.
Then at the other end 2 minutes later, Bromsgrove went close when a through ball found Peters who ran into the left front of the box before seeing his shot past the advancing Davis roll towards the keeper’s left hand corner but hit the outside of his left hand post. However, it wouldn’t have counted had it gone it as the offside flag had gone up against Peters.
Then in the 64th minute, United pulled a goal back when Prosper’s throw in on the right found Berry who, with his back to goal and shielded by Sporting captain Jones, managed to slip a short low through ball into the box to Coles who went down under challenge from Wilson. Referee Cox said penalty and after the home side’s protests had died down, Berry stepped up to fire the resulting spot kick into Brown’s top left hand corner with the keeper going the other way. 1-4
Bromsgrove made their final change in the 66th minute when John Pykett came on to replace Shorrock before the Ducks made their final substitution 4 minutes later with Ollie Stanbridge coming on to replace Prosper.
The visitors improved and came back into it after the goal and they went close just into the 75th minute when Bewley’s free kick from the left found a completely unmarked Callum Mapley at the far post who somehow managed to fire his left foot shot from 8 yards wide of Brown’s left hand post with the goal at his mercy when he really should have scored.
The Ducks went close again in the 78th minute when Greg Williams’ right foot free kick from 25 yards was clawed away to his right by Brown.
Then at the other end in the 81st minute, Bromsgrove went close when Jones picked up a loose ball and ran forward on the right before passing wide to his right to Pykett who cut in before having his low left foot shot from 18 yards held by Davis.
A good chance came United’s way in the 84th minute when Bewley won a tackle with Quaynor on the left and came forward before eventually sending a low diagonal ball to Coles in space inside the right of the box, who fired his first time right foot shot from 13 yards over the bar.
Bromsgrove went close in the 86th minute when Cresswell played a one-two on the right before Pykett before having his low left foot shot from 20 yards comfortably held by Davis.
It was 5-1 in the 88th minute when Quaynor ran forward on the right before sending a low through ball on the right to Peters whose low first time lay-off found Pykett on the touchline, who took a couple of touches and ran forward before sending a low through ball to the on-running Peters who ran into the right side of the box before being brought down by Lataille. Referee Cox said penalty and Peters stepped up to fire the resulting spot kick into Davis’ right hand corner to complete his hat-trick. 5-1 Bromsgrove
The last chance came Bromsgrove’s way in the 89th minute when Quaynor’s corner from the right found Jones at the near post whose header across goal found Roberts just beyond the far post who headed wide from 3 yards.
The final blast of referee Cox’s whistle after 3 minutes of added time at the end brought the game to an end and confirmed Aylesbury’s 2nd league defeat out of 3 games so far.
Ben Williams’ side will need to be at their best for the home tie with old rivals Marlow in the FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round at The Meadow on Sunday if they are to have a decent run in the competition this season.
