A trip to East London, and a newly assembled Walthamstow team was the challenge for the Ducks today. Sonny French took a seat on the bench after picking up a knock in Tuesday's defeat to Didcot, with Nasha Mukwada and Harry Jones also reverting to the bench, with Jack Moriarty, Dave O’Connor and Lee Stobbs (for the first time since injuring his knee on New Year’s Day) all restored to the starting XI.
The hosts started well, but found the Ducks defence in determined form; first Jack Wood made a good block to deny a shot from Yannick Kissi, then shortly afterwards, a flowing move across the 18-yard box involving Kissi, saw the ball delivered to Callum Ibe, but as he shot, Alfie Anderson got in another clock to concede a corner.
In the 16th minute, a corner from the right from Ryan Kirwan was met by skipper Jordan Watson 10 yards out, but his header was wide of the near post. However, it was Watson who was to give his side the lead in the 23rd minute. Ibe played an astute ball into the penalty area, where O’Connor slipped attempting a tackle, leaving the striker one on one with Jack Hopwood; he rounded the keeper and coolly passed the ball into the unguarded net. 1-0 Walthamstow
Four minutes later, Jack Green skipped past 3 challenges in midfield before shooting from 20 yards, but Hopwood was equal to his strike, calmly claiming the ball.
Eight minutes before half time, some good work between Jake Bewley, playing in an unfamiliar advanced role and Alfie Anderson saw the ball moved inside to Pierce McNamara, who shot from 25 yards but his effort rose above the crossbar. Two minutes later a long ball from O’Connor found Tom McElroy on the edge of the penalty area; he held the ball up well and turned towards goal, before firing towards the top corner; sadly for the Ducks, home stopper Brad Robinson was able to make a good save high to his right.
With 5 minutes left on the clock before half time, a ball forward was misjudged on the half way line by Anderson, leaving Ibe clear on goal. However, Hopwood was quickly off his line to close down the space and block his effort, with the rebound falling back to Ibe, his goal bound effort was blocked for a corner. The final chance came just before the break, when a corner from Ibe was flicked across goal by Carl Mensah to Green at the far post, however, his effort from 6 yards was into the side netting.
Half-time: Walthamstow 1-0 Aylesbury
Ten minutes after the restart a deep free kick from Anderson was met by a volley from McElroy, but his effort was well saved at the near post by Robinson.
In the 73rd minute, Ibe crossed to substitute Demaray Anyadike who returned the ball back into the 6-yard box, where Watson and Ibe joined together to try to force the ball home, only to see their efforts saved at point blank range by Hopwood. With two minutes remaining, a long ball forward to Watson saw him control the ball well, before firing across goal from a narrow angle and out for a goal kick.
Amazingly the Ducks found an equaliser that their efforts deserved as the clock ticked towards 90 minutes. Anderson did well on the left, cutting inside and passing to McElroy just outside the penalty area. He looked up and fired a powerful shot past Robinson to draw the scores level. 1-1
However, there was more heartbreak for the Ducks to come. With the game deep into stoppage time, caused mainly by two lengthy injury delays in the second half, a cross from the left by Ibe found Anyadike unmarked at the far post, whose header was guided past Hopwood into the far corner. 2-1 Walthamstow
So, after the last-minute concession of a winning goal, the same happened today. Again, another resolute performance that ultimately left the Ducks pointless on the day and slipping down to 2nd from bottom of the league. Next up is the visit of Highworth Town on Wednesday night, when the Ducks will be trying hard to break their current losing run and move away from the foot of the table.
