After two defeats in their opening league matches of the season, attention turned back to the FA Cup, as the Ducks entertained Clevedon Town of the Western League.
Hoping to arrest a run of disappointing performances, manager Jack Wells introduced new signing Ayo Akinbobola at right back, with Derek Feyi returning at centre back, in place of Daryl Bryan-Samuels and Romario Rowe. Also into the team came Rocko Tamplin in place of Ollie Jovanovic and Owen 'Juice' James, partnering his namesake up top for the first time, replacing Tyriq Hunte.
A good start saw the Ducks threaten first; Owen James winning the ball on the half way line before feeding Dave Pearce. He cut inside but saw his shot from 20 yards blocked. Jake Bewley did well on the left, before passing to Pearce. He spotted the run of James, who made room for a shot, but saw his effort clear the crossbar.
On 25 minutes, Akinbobola combined well with Tamplin on the right, who crossed to Owen 'Juice' James on the edge of the penalty area, whose first-time shot was saved well by James Dunn, low at his left-hand post.
The action was all in the Clevedon half, with James Callan mainly a spectator in the Ducks goal for the first half hour; on 36, Dunn again came to the rescue of his team, making another smart save to deny James, who had cut inside two defenders before shooting towards goal.
For all their dominance, it was the Ducks who fell behind to something of a sucker punch goal. Bewley was beaten in a challenge by full back Sol Kent, who made ground, evading desperate tackles by Jack Moriarty and Lewis Crosbie before firing a powerful shot past Callan from 20 yards, only to see his effort rebound off the near post. However, first man on the scene was his team mate Owen Punselie, who volleyed home well from 15 yards to give the Seasiders the lead against the run of play. 1-0 Clevedon
Half-time: Aylesbury 0-1 Clevedon
Into the second half, with the Ducks looking for a way back into the game, it almost arrived in the 56th minute. James crossed from the left, Dunn parried the ball as far as Pearce, but his shot was blocked for a corner.
However, hopes of a comeback were dashed in the 67th minute; a free kick on the left touch line was half cleared to substitute James Wakefield, who pushed the ball past a lunging Moriarty, who brought him down, conceding a penalty. Skipper Alex Camm steeped up to power the ball into the bottom corner, beating the dive of Callan. 2-0 Clevedon
The goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of the Ducks, going 2 goals down to the opposition's only two shots on target.
It could have been even worse 5 minutes later, as Wakefield played a long ball forward to Punselie, who controlled it and made for the penalty area, to see his shot well saved by Callan.
Despite going for broke and throwing on attacking options, the Ducks couldn’t find a way past a resolute Seasiders defence and left the FA Cup in a meek fashion on the night.
Attention now focuses on the Bank Holiday weekend fixtures, first the visit of Hertford Town on Saturday, then a trip to close neighbours Kings Langley on Monday, a game which will see the annual sponsored walk by the members of 21CD and other supporters, raising money for this season’s chosen charity partners, ‘Youth Concern’
