Following a creditable draw on Saturday against play off chasing Ware, the Ducks finally got to play Biggleswade FC for the first time this season, after 3 previous postponements of the fixture. Just one change to the starting line up, with Brayden Daniel returning in place of Ken Feyi, missing due to a niggling injury.
The hosts started well, dominating the play and passing the ball around well in the early stages, without really causing the Ducks defence much stress. The first real opportunity came in the 12th minute, Adam Hunt doing well on the right before crossing into the 6-yard box where Harry Dawson met the ball, but couldn’t direct the ball on target.
With 20 minutes elapsed, a corner by Charie Hayford was headed out by Derek Feyi as far as Rio Bedingfield, who hit a powerful shot from 25 yards which crashed into James Callan's right-hand post and rebounded across goal, before being cleared.
Seven minutes before the break, a good pass over the defence set Tom Coles free on goal, but his shot was rushed as Callan came off his line and sailed over the crossbar.
After soaking up the pressure for virtually the whole of the first half, the Ducks had a half chance themselves as the game entered added on time at the end of the first period. A long goal kick by Callan was headed goalwards by Max Cavana to Dave Pearce, but his shot from 30 yards was too high to trouble Tyler Josephs in the home goal.
Half-time: Biggleswade 0-0 Aylesbury
After the relative tedium of the first period, the second started with both teams showing more attacking intent; with just 3 minutes gone a fine through ball from David Lynn found Tom Cove who broke into the penalty area and shot from 10 yards, but Josephs saved well.
The next attack saw Hunt clear on the right for the hosts, he pulled the ball back to Jack Dickerson unmarked on the edge of the penalty area, but his shot was rushed and cleared the crossbar. Two minutes later, a good flowing move down the left saw Kwai Marsh-Brown combine well with Jake Bewley and Cove, before the ball was pulled back to Hayden Beadle 15 yards out, but his shot was too close to Josephs, who made a comfortable save.
The hosts took the lead in the 53rd minute, a deep cross from the left by Alex Marsh saw Hunt ghost in behind Bewley at the far post to strike a fine volley past Callan into the far corner of the net. 1-0 Biggleswade
The Ducks almost hit back straight away, Beadle found Lynn in the centre circle, who picked out Cavana overlapping on the right; his low cross into the penalty area was met by Marsh-Brown, but his 1st time effort was narrowly wide of the near post.
Biggleswade doubled their lead in the 65th minute, catching the Ducks on the break. Hayford played a good ball forward to Marsh, who spotted Bedingfield charging forward in support; the ball was played into his path and he hit a powerful shot past Callan from the edge of the penalty area. 2-0 Biggleswade
With five minutes left on the clock good work by Daniel in midfield saw him avoid two challenges before playing the ball through to Cove on the edge of the penalty area, who saw his shot deflected wide for a corner. Pearce took the corner kick, which was headed out as far as Cavana, who did really well to turn and get a shot away, but it was narrowly wide of the target.
With the game in added on time, a Pearce free kick from wide on the right was headed out to Beadle who saw his shot blocked, the ball was played in again and reached Bewley who turned and shot past Josephs, but was disappointed to see the offside flag raised. The final opportunity fell to Pearce; a long kick from Callan was well controlled by Cavana and played inside to Pearce, whose shot from 20 yards was well saved.
So a disappointing result, but another decent performance against strong opposition. Next up is a trip to play off chasing Welwyn Garden City on Saturday, with the Ducks looking to finish the season strongly and collect more points to help them pull away from the foot of the league.
