After equalling a little piece of club history with their 2-0 away win over Northwood 3 days earlier, Aylesbury United continued their winning start to the season with a 1-0 home win over Flackwell Heath in their Bucks derby in the Pitching In Southern League Division 1 Central at The Meadow, Chesham on Tuesday night.
That win over Northwood was their 3rd win their first 3 league games of the season, which was last achieved in season 1998-99 under Bob Dowie in the Ryman League Premier Division.
Saturday's win in Middlesex plus results elsewhere on both Saturday and Bank Holiday Monday saw Aylesbury go into Tuesday's game in 5th place in the table as the 2nd placed of 4 teams all on 9 points, with The Ducks having a game on the other 3 teams.
Meanwhile, Flackwell Heath went into the game on the back of a 3-0 home win over Leighton Town on Saturday, which was their 4th straight league win in their first 4 games.
That win over Leighton Town plus results elsewhere on Saturday and Monday left Flackwell in 2nd place, level on points with both top of the table Real Bedford and 3rd placed Berkhamsted with Flackwell having the 2nd best goal difference of the trio.
The first opportunity came Flackwell's way right at the end of the 3rd minute when Kieran Jordan's low through ball down the right found Jack Shakespeare, who took a touch to control and ran into the right of the box before Jake Bewley got in a great potentially goal-saving tackle for a corner.
Then at the other end just before the end of the 8th minute, Luqman Kassim ran down the left before his deep cross to the far post found Kamil Zielinski, whose first time right foot angled shot from 12 yards was blocked by former Duck Callum Mapley on the edge of the box.
An opportunity came Flackwell's way just into the 13th minute when Lewis Patrick's low ball infield from the left found Harry Mepham in the middle, who took a touch to control before passing to his right to Louis Bouwers and he took a touch to control before firing his low right foot shot from 30 yards well wide of Ducks keeper Jack Hopwood's right hand post.
A good chance came United's way in the 22nd minute when Will St Clair-Burton's long ball over the top from just inside his own half left Zielinski in on goal, who rounded Flackwell keeper Michael Edegbe to his left as he drove him wide but had his attempted right foot shot from 12 yards smothered by Edegbe for a corner.
Flackwell went close just into the 31st minute when Jordan beat Charley Tuttle on the right before crossing low into the middle for Michael Harding, who took a touch to control before firing his right foot shot wide of Hopwood's right hand post.
With Aylesbury's Ben Peters already having been shown a yellow card by referee Josh Burns in the 37th minute, Flackwell's Matthew Ayres joined him in the referee's notebook in the 44th minute after a bad tackle on Morrison Hashii.
Then 1 minute 45 seconds into added time at the end of the half, Bouwers became the third visiting player to be yellow carded.
Half-time: Aylesbury 0-0 Flackwell Heath
Flackwell made a half time change with Phil Pryor coming on to replace Jordan.
Then in the 48th minute, Bewley was yellow carded for blocking a visiting attack about 35 yards from goal.
From the resulting free kick in the 49th minute, Mapley's right foot free kick was well palmed away to his left by Hopwood for a corner.
Aylesbury made the first change in the 50th minute when Kwai Marsh-Brown came on to replace St Clair-Burton.
Then just before the end of the 57th minute, The Ducks took the lead when Hashii's corner from the left into the middle was headed upwards by former Duck Callum Mapley and the ball fell to Ben Stallard, who sent his first time right foot volley from 12 yards like an excel missile into Edegbe's top right hand corner for a stunning finish. 1-0 Aylesbury
The hosts went close to doubling their lead right at the end of the 67th minute when, with the assistant referee flagging for an offside against Flackwell Heath, referee Burns played a great advantage as Bewley's ball out of defence from the edge of his own box found Kassim on the right. He broke before seeing his diagonal ball from the right to left of middle find Zielinski 28 yards out who headed it down to Marsh-Brown on the edge of the box, whose scuffed shot was superbly turned over the bar one handed by Edegbe for a corner.
Flackwell made their second change in the 69th minute when Christian Johnson came on to replace James Ayres.
The visitors went within an ace of an equaliser deep into the 72nd minute when Jack Shakespeare picked up the ball 40 yards out and made a driving run through the middle, evading a few challenges before seeing his right foot shot from 25 yards clip the top of the bar to Hopwood's right.
Although there were less chances of note for the rest of the game, Aylesbury dug in and defended resolutely towards the end as they battled to maintain their lead.
United made their second change in the 81st minute Kajetan Halatyn came on to replace Kassim.
Meanwhile, Flackwell their final change deep into the 83rd minute when Ed Lee came on to replace Matthew Ayres.
What proved to be the final chance of the evening came the visitors' way deep into the 89th minute when, from Shakespeare's corner from the left, the ball eventually ran to Lee inside the right of the box who took a touch to control before his right foot shot from 15 yards well wide of Hopwood's right hand post.
Then with the 4th Official having indicated a minimum of 5 minutes added fine to be played at the end, the final blast of referee Burns' whistle after 5 minutes 8 seconds of added time brought the game to a close and confirmed The Ducks' 4th league win in their first 4 games.
The last time that was achieved was back in season 1987-88 in the Beazer Homes League Premier Division and before that in the Delphian League in 1953-54, when The Ducks went on to win the title at the end of the season on both occasions.
There is obviously a long way to go yet and a lot of football to be played but dare The Ducks' players, management team and supporters begin to dream that history might repeat itself come the end of April\'
