After three successive wins, the Ducks returned to action against Northwood, looking to do the double over the visitors, having already beaten them in the away fixture earlier in the season. Three changes to the line up saw Luke Daley replace the unavailable Jack Hopwood in goal, the injured Kian Henry replaced by Gianni Massi and Liam Batchelor-Morgan rested to the bench, with Kajetan Halatyn starting.
The changes necessitated a change of position for Will St Clair-Burton, who lined up at centre half alongside skipper Jack Wood, with Massi filling his midfield berth, while Jake Bewley played at right back, with Halatyn in his usual striking role.
The visitors had the first opportunity in the 7th minute; Hassan Jalloh got to the by-line before pulling the ball back to Harry McKenna, who took a touch before passing to Sam Folarin, who saw his shot from 12 yards cleared off the line by Wood, not the first time the skipper has been in the right place at the right time!
Sonny French, in a rich vein of form of late, had a good opportunity in the 22nd minute; Haziz Kone collected the ball in midfield, before passing to French who took an early shot from 25 yards which was straight at visiting keeper Aymen Azaze.
French had an even better opportunity just before the half hour, after the Ducks broke out of defence, with Massi finding Luqman Kassim wide on the left. He made good ground down the flank, before cutting inside and firing a powerful shot which Azaze parried out to French 15 yards from goal; his volley was fired into the ground and off the crossbar, with Halatyn reacting quickest the fire home. Despite Azaze making a valiant effort to keep his shot out, the assistant referee was well placed to determine that the ball had crossed the line. 1-0 Aylesbury
Seven minutes later, Charley Tuttle lost the ball to McKenna who advanced and shot, but Daley did well to save, with Bewley on hand to clear the ball as it ran loose.
Daley did well two minutes later, when a back header by Bewley was almost intercepted by Josh Williams, but the keeper was quickly off his line to get to the ball ahead of the striker.
Half-time: Aylesbury 1-0 Northwood
Into the second half and Jalloh had a good opportunity to level the scores; a good run past Bewley and pull back from Williams found the striker free on the edge of the penalty area, but his shot was wild and high over the bar.
Just before the hour mark, patient build up play around the penalty area saw the ball fall to Folarin, but his shot from 15 yards found the side netting, with Daley guarding the post.
The next attack saw Massi pass the ball forward to Halatyn on half way, who spread the ball wide to Tom Cove on the right, who saw his shot from 25 yards fly wide of the post. In the 67th minute Cove did extremely well on the right to beat Alison Ferreira De Paiva before driving a low ball across the 6-yard box, agonisingly out of reach for French as he slid in.
Substitute Devonte Totesaut did well on the right before playing the ball to Folarin who turned and shot on the edge of the penalty area, but Daley was down smartly to save. Just a minute later Folarin collected a ball forward in the channel and turned and shot, but again Daley was a match for his effort; this time the ball rebounded back to Folarin, who laid the ball back to Jalloh 20 yards out, but his effort was wild and high and wide of the target.
With 6 minutes of normal time remaining, Kone was fouled by De Paiva as he looked to break forward; referee Joanne Horwood applied the advantage rule to good effect and allowed the Ducks attack to develop through Cove, who carried the ball to the edge of the penalty area before passing square to Kassim, but Azaze was out quickly to smother what looked like a great opportunity to score.
The Ducks won a corner in the 88th minute, which Kassim took from the left, being met by French who forced the ball home for what looked initially like the second goal, only for the referee to correctly show him a yellow card for using his hand to force the ball in.
With 6 minutes added time to play, the visitors had a great opportunity to draw level as the added-on time began; substitute Joe Booth appeared to control the ball with his hand, not seen by the officials, he made the most of the opportunity and crossed to De Paiva, whose free header from 12 yards was high and wide.
The Ducks defended the remaining time well and saw out the rest of the match to claim their 4th win on the spin. The action wasn't quite over, as visiting manager Gary Meakin let his emotions get the better of him, picking up a red card for his language towards the match officials as they left the pitch.
Next up, weather permitting, is another home match, as former landlords Leighton Town make the visit to Chesham on Saturday, before we visit Real Bedford for the second time this season, following the abandoned match just before Christmas.
